Hishammuddin: Umno Youth not behind demos

PUTRAJAYA (March 21, 2008):Umno Youth chief Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein today denied that the wing was behind the demonstrations staged against the new state governments recently.
“I don’t know whether they (Youth members) were involved in the rallies. ... definitely it’s not planned by me or Umno Youth,” he said in a press conference after the first post-cabinet meeting of the 12th government's Education Ministry.
Hishammuddin said he has been very consistent in not supporting activities that run foul of the law and threaten the security of the country.
“But I am hoping those in the Oppositions who are now ruling the states be responsible. You raise issues on race and religions, you have to face the anger and reaction,” he said.
Recently, there were rallies in Penang and Selangor against the new state governments, apparently involving Umno state leaders.
Hishammuddin said the directive from the wing was that its state heads have to go to the ground and study what contributed to the setbacks (losses of BN) in the March 8 general election.
He said Umno and BN Youth would also make sure that the people did not react emotionally over the polls results.
He also questioned the intention of Gua Musang Umno chief Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah for calling the party to hold a special general meeting to discuss the party's poor performance in the election.
“In this situation, we need to give support to our leadership to strengthen the party and renew the spirit of the members ... this raises the question whether his intention is sincere or (is he) taking advantage of the situation,” he said.
“We have not gone into the stage of recovery, so I don’t think it’s appropriate (to hold the meeting).”
Asked if Razaleigh’s move would cause a split in the party, he said: “This I don’t know. You have to ask him.”
On the election results reflecting that the Chinese and Indians did not support BN government’s education policy on the vernacular schools, Hishammuddin said: "The problem is not only confined to vernacular but also national, religious and private schools."
"A holistic study is therefore needed to find out why the BN had lost (significant) support among the people. We will study if there are any contradictory statements on polices between the five new state governments (under the Opposition rule)."
Asked if he had any strategies to check on the new state governments’ inconsistency in policies, he said: “I don’t have to.The public is not stupid. People always accuse BN of thinking the public and voters are stupid. But they do understand. Without me highlighting it, the public is already coming to me complaining about the incosnsitencies between the states.
“With the new political landscape, you cannot fool the people all the time. You can fool all the people sometime, you cannot fool all the people all the time,” he added.

1."A holistic study is therefore needed to find out why the BN had lost (significant) support among the people. We will study if there are any contradictory statements on polices between the five new state governments (under the Opposition rule)." - As per BN's request : "show the people's power in the ballot box" not on streets (http://selians.blogspot.com/2007/11/hindraf-rally-report-al-jazera.html)
So, I think they have shown it....then why worry? You asked for it and people have show in the ballot box. You don't have to ask why BN fall? You have to ask how to listen to people and work for the people.
2. "Without me highlighting it, the public is already coming to me complaining about the inconsistencies between the states." - Sure, UMNOPUTRA surely will complain to you. Why did not they go to PM? Public will go to the new government. When BN said 50,000 people is insignificant .... 1,000 UMNOPUTRA in Penang is "just a mosquito"
3. "You can fool all the people sometime, you cannot fool all the people all the time,” - This is for BN, you fooled all for sometime ....but not all the time
