Interlok: TPM bohongi rakyat, dakwa Pengerusi Niat

KUALA LUMPUR: Pengerusi Badan Bertindak Interlok Kebangsaan (Niat), Haji Thasleem Mohamed Ibrahim mendakwa Timbalan Perdana Menteri Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin telah membohongi rakyat Malaysia berhubung isu buku kontroversi, Interlok edisi murid.

NO INDIANS

The Malay Mail, Frankie D'Cruz, Monday, April 11th, 2011 A CLASSIFIED advertisement for the rental of a high-end condominium in Kuala Lumpur appallingly asserts NO INDIANS — throwing up a regrettable case of selective bias. It was the first time in local English media that I had come across a downright racist advertisement that steered prospective Indian tenants away. It was not meant for Indian nationals — it applied to any Indian, including me. I may be accused of overstepping racial lines but the advertisement in a national daily by a Malaysian Chinese lady working and living in Sydney, Australia, takes Indian bashing here to new depths of shame. The advertisement by the owner, a radiologist, for rental of her apartment suite at Bistari condominium near the PWTC and The Mall explicitly states “No Indians”, something so bold and blunt unseen in the housing ads of newspapers. Her problem with Indians: curry! She would not have her tenant cooking up a ...

Teluk Intan MP, activist arrested at protest

Image
Teluk Intan member of parliament M Manogaran was today arrested along with the head of the Malaysian Tamil Students Progressive Associations (MATSAP), MS Arjunan, while demonstrating against the controversial Interlok novel. Manogaran ( second from right ), who is from the DAP , and Arjunan ( far right ) had arrived with a small crowd of activists earlier this morning at the Batu Caves temple complex in Gombak. Kuala Lumpur. They were demonstrating against the Education Ministry's decision to make Interlok a compulsory reading material for form five students taking the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) exams, this year onwards. Police moved in and arrested Manogaran and Arjunan around noon, when the former addressed those gathered and urged the Indian community to unite against the introduction of the literature component in the Bahasa Malaysia subject. Both Manogaran and Arjunan were taken to the Gombak district police headquarters. They were released at about 2.40pm after...

MyKad burden for children of Hindu-Muslim parentage

Image
The name on the identity card (MyKad) reads Ravichandran a/l Muniandy*. For the 17 years of his life, this gangly teenager has lived as a Hindu, and yet his MyKad states that he is a Muslim. But at least he has a MyKad - received three years after he first applied for it, and only because his father, Muniandy, had made a scene at the National Registration Department (NRD) in Putrajaya. "We applied when he was 13, but even then the registration officer there tried to reject the application, saying that his mother's name is Malay so my son's name must be changed to a Malay name too. I refused, so they told me to go to Putrajaya," Muniandy said. The second application was lodged with the boy's name, Ravichandran a/l Muniandy, as per his birth certificate, but nothing came out of it, and the boy was forced to sit his PMR with only the application slip. "We went to the (NRD) branch several times and were told the card never arrived, so I went to Putr...

Tamil school still waiting for building after 20 years

Image
It would have been a heart-warming view - a vernacular and a national school co-existing in the same compound. But that is where the feel-good story ends. Sekolah Kebangsaan Tok Pawang and Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Tamil Sg Tok Pawang share the same compound, but it's a different story with the canteen. SJK(T) pupils have been denied access to the canteen. This was decided by SK Tok Pawang teachers after frequent quarrels between the pupils of the two schools. The SJK(T) PIBG then organised a makeshift canteen for the 170 Tamil school students at a corridor behind the building. Students of both schools also do not share classrooms. Twenty-three years ago the students of the Tamil school were accommodated at SK Tok Pawang after they had to abandon their own building due to pollution caused by the nearby Lee Rubber building. The Tamil school received a new lease of life when the Kedah state government allocated 5.5 acres of land to build a new school on April 3 this year. Menteri Be...

Cuit: Alkisah India di India dan India di Malaysia

Image
Ia semacam satu agama. Kasta atas tidak boleh bersatu kasta rendah. Jalan rayanya...

Extra Deepavali school holiday

PUTRAJAYA: State education directors have been told to approve requests from schools for an extra day off on Oct 20 to celebrate Deepavali. Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the ministry has received many such requests from parents and schools. “The decision was made to enable parents to make plans for their families to travel earlier and avoid traffic jams,” he said, after inspecting students sitting for the first day of the Penilaian Menengah Rendah (PMR) at SMK Presint 8 (1) yesterday. Deepavali will be celebrated next Saturday. Muhyiddin, who is also Education Minister, said schools could opt to take either occasional holidays ( cuti peristiwa ) which need not be replaced, or replacement holidays. “Schools taking the replacement holiday need to hold their classes on Oct 31,” he added. Education director-general Tan Sri Alimuddin Mohd Dom said schools had already replaced the Monday holiday for Oct 19 last month. “They will be getting a four-day holiday if t...

Temple demo: Residents march with cow's head

Image
***************** Before dispersing, several protesters spat and stomped on the cow's head. The cow is considered sacred among Hindus. Addressing the crowd, Section 23 action committee deputy chair Ibrahim Sabri said: "If there is blood, you (the state government) will be responsible if you are adamant about building the temple." "This is a warning. Relocate the temple to Section 22. This cow is a present to the state government. This is a gift from us," he added. The protesters also carried several banners which among others read 'Take Beer' (mocking PAS' rallying cry of 'Takbir') and 'Illegal temples are very small, but once relocated, they are as big as Putrajaya'. The crowd gathered for about 15 minutes at the main entrance of the state secretariat building under the watch of more than a dozen police personnel. seals: "under the watch of more than a dozen police personnel." ?? So police gave protection???? **********...

Confirmed: Indian Studies Department downgraded

Image
University Malaya vice chancellor Ghauth Jasmon confirmed the Indian Studies Department (ISD) will be now known as the Indian and South Asian Studies Department. The announcement was in stark contrast to assurances by Ghauth just days ago that the department will be preserved in its original form and its name maintained . "We will maintain the programmes but the name change is to give the department wider scope," said Ghauth ( right ). The ISD was established in 1956 under the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences in University Malaya. A controversy arose when department head S Kumaran, who retired, was replaced with Mohd Raduan Ariff, the first man not of Indian origin to head the department. Subsequently there was another uproar in the community when word leaked out that ISD is to be replaced with a South Asian Studies Department. Programmes to go on Current Arts and Social Sciences Faculty dean, Redzuan Othman, said there would be no change in the programmes as there are man...
