Isa's victory could spark dangerous trend
"If this happens, it would undermine the integrity and tarnish the image of Malaysian political governance in future," cautioned University Sains Malaysia academician Dr Sivamurugan Pandian.
Referring to Isa's suspension after he was found guilty of buying votes during the party polls in 2004, he chided Umno's decision to field a tainted character as its candidate for the by-election.
He said Umno's decision was mainly influenced by Isa's popularity, boosted by his good track record during his time as Negri Sembilan menteri besar.
But that does not mean that the voters should be forced to overlook Isa's tainted record pertaining to money politics, he added.
"A candidate's virtue and moral standing should very much form the political equation for consideration.
"A victory for such tainted characters could set a dangerous future electoral norm on choosing candidates.
