US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and first lady Michelle Obama present give away Secretary of State's Award for International Women of Courage to Malaysia's Ambiga Sreenevasan at the State Department in Washington , DC . (AFP)
The shame of it all that we should be so proud (and are) of our own Malaysian receiving an international award like this, but the Malaysian government and press dont see it as important enough to publish it in our local dailies! It was only published by THE SUN but rather small and hidden in the inner pages.
WHY???...SOME HIDDEN REASON? BUT WHEN OTHER DID NOT MAKE IT ALSO CAN GET AWARDS OR CAN BE SECOND TO DO IT CAN BE RECEIVED WITH "HANG TUAH" STYLE AT AIRPORT?
BUT SHE ALSO MADE IT TO THE WORLD MEDIA:
Indian Origin President of Malaysian Bar council, Ambiga Sreenevasan was among the eight recipients of this year’s “International Women of Courage Award”, presented by US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton in Washington.
Sreenevasan was chosen for the prestigious award, established by the US Department of State, for being a forerunner in advancing human rights, the status of women and religious tolerance in Malaysia, ‘Bernama´ news agency reported.
The social organisations in Malaysia have lauded Sreenevasan’s efforts as a strong emerging voice for tolerance and justice, which has a direct impact on judicial reform in Malaysia, contributing to strengthening of the role of women in civil society.
Sreenevasan was present to receive the award at Washington given away this Monday in conjunction with International Women’s Day.
The honorees are recognised for their outstanding contribution on behalf of women and their societies, and for tackling such issues as domestic violence, forced and child marriage, human trafficking, fighting corruption and demanding government transparency, defending access to justice and the rule of law, and safeguarding equal rights and opportunities for women.
