Mar 12, 08 5:49pm Pasir Panjang state assemblyperson and Perak PAS secretary Mohamad Nizar Jamaludin was today confirmed as the new menteri besar of the state. The decision was reached after the Regent of Perak Raja Nazrin Shah met with the three nominees for the post this evening. The other two candidates for the post were state DAP chairperson and Sitiawan state assemblyperson Ngeh Khoo Ham and PKR’s Behrang assemblyperson Jamaluddin Mohd Radzi. Also decided today is that Ngeh would be made the deputy mentri besar (1) while an Indian candidate would be made deputy mentri besar (2). The new mentri besar will be sworn in at 4pm tomorrow. Under the state constitution, the menteri besar has to be a Malay Muslim, but there is a provision that allows the sultan to waive the requirement. PETALING JAYA (March 11, 2008): Education Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said his ministry will keep its promise to resolve the long-standing problem of reopening the original SJK (C) Damansara which was closed in 2001. He said although former Petaling Jaya Utara MP Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun lost in the election, he would honour the promise made to her and SJKC Damansara Save our School Committee (SOS Damansara) chief Yoong Yuk Sang before the general election. Hishammuddin said in a statement on Monday that the Damansara school issue would be resolved soon, just as promised. He also expressed his sympathies to Yoong's family over his death. Yoong died on Monday following a short illness while waiting for his last wish - the reopening of the school - to be fulfilled. Dass PETALING JAYA (March 11, 2008): DAP Selangor representative, Kinrara assemblyman Teresa Kok, today had audience with the Sultan of Selangor, during which she declared her party's support for PKR secretary-general Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim to be appointed Menteri Besar. She told reporters after her hour-long audience with the ruler from 3pm that the party had issued a letter of consent on this matter to the Sultan. Kok, who represented the DAP's 13 assemblymen, said the Sultan also wanted to know whether both parties could work together to form the state government. The PKR won 15 seats, and PAS eight in the 12th general election. Together with DAP, the loose coalition wants to rule Selangor. They are the Prai assemblyman from DAP, Prof. P Ramasamy, and Penanti assemblyman from PKR, Mohammad Fairus Khairuddin. Lim has not yet named the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the state assembly, but said the two posts would also be filled by representatives from PKR.

Penang CM announces waivers, new policies (2nd update) PENANG: Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said Tuesday that the Penang Municipal Council and Seberang Perai Municipal Council will waive all summonses involving hawker licences and parking offences issued before March 11. Lim made the announcement just hours after being sworn in as Chief Minister. The government could not estimate how much this involved, but Lim said that the waiver would not affect the councils' operations as it was monies not collected yet. The announcements are part of the new government's "agenda for change to re-establish rule by the people,'' he said in a statement. He said it will also review the policy of political appointments in the councils, and would look towards restoring local government elections. KLANG: Former Port Klang assemblyman Datuk Zakaria Md Deros died after suffering a heart attack early Tuesday morning. The controversial 62-year-old politician was dropped from the Selangor Barisan Nasional line-up for the general election. He was replaced by his daughter-in-law Roselinda Abdul Jamil as the candidate for the seat, which she did not win. Also a former Klang municipal councillor, Zakaria hogged headlines last year when he had a run-in with the law for not submitting building plans for a mansion that was described as a virtual “istana” (palace) by his critics. He was also found to have not paid the assessment for another property for 12 years, while his family was caught operating an illegal satay restaurant on government reserve land.
