Image
Police arrested Human Rights Party (HRP) leader P Uthayakumar and 108 others and erected roadblocks around Kuala Lumpur in the bid to stop an 'anti-racism' rally organised by it and its affiliate Hindraf in the city centre today . The rally was also aimed at protesting the controversial 'Interlok' novel by national laureate Abdullah Hussain, which has been criticised for containing racial slurs and stereotypes against the Indian and Chinese communities. Uthayakumar ( right ), who has been arrested numerous times, including as leader of the banned Hindraf, and spent 18 months in detention under the Internal Security Act (ISA), was today intercepted by the police as he left his apartment in Pantai Hillpark, Kuala Lumpur, at 8am. “He was handcuffed and taken in a white van,” said Uthayakumar's younger brother, Waythamoorthy from London in an SMS message to Malaysiakini . According to HRP information chief S Jayathas, Uthayakumar was been brought to the Sent...

Hindraf invites UN to monitor march

Image
The Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) has requested for observers from the United Nations (UN) to monitor its 'People's March in Solidarity Against Umno's Racism' this Sunday. The march will start from the KLCC at 9am, and end at the Dang Wangi Police station. The demonstration is to protest against Interlok , the controversial novel that Form Five students use as a compulsory literature text. Hindraf national information coordinator, S Jayathas ( third from left ), said that it would only be fair if the UN were to to witness how the protestors were being handled by the police. He was speaking at the UN office in Kuala Lumpur. "The UN will see that we are running a peaceful demonstration ." Jayathas added that the police have yet to reply regarding their application for a police permit submitted on Feb 11. Asked to comment on Ibrahim Ali Perkasa president lodging a police report against Hindraf today , he replied: "Perkasa is under the Umno. I...

Crackdown on anti-Interlok forums continues

Image
While previous arrests have only occurred when forums are under way, the police today tried to pre-empt an anti- Interlok forum in Hulu Selangor by arresting its organiser, prior to tonight's event. Malaysiakini was alerted to the arrest of M Gobalakrishnan, 26, whose name appeared as the contact person on fliers promoting the anti- Interlok forum by a representative of the Human Rights Party (HRP) this afternoon. "They came to his house at 12.30pm today, without an arrest warrant. They picked him up and took him to the local police station. "I believe they arrested him for organising an illegal event," the Indian party's information chief S Jayathas said when contacted. However, Jayathas ( left ) said, the forum would go on despite the absence of Gobalakrishnan, who was picked up by six plainclothes police officers. "We will go on with it, and hold the event at another venue in the same housing area," he said, adding that HRP was not daunted ...

Merlimau: By-election and the promised lands

Image
After more than two decades of promises, SRJK (T) Merlimau, now squatting in the compound of a secondary school, may finally get its own premises. But even Education Minister Muhyiddin Yassin's presence at the groundbreaking ceremony tomorrow may not be enough to convince residents. Approached by Malaysiakini during a visit to the constituency last week, voter Ramachandran, 60, said that the same promise has been made for the past four general elections. “They are now measuring the place, but we don't know what will happen after the by-election,” said Ramachandran, who has lived in Merlimau almost all his life. The promise is also pretty familiar to Durairaj, 48, who had attended the school with his siblings some three decades ago. “I was a student there, as were my sister and brother. Now my children go there. We have heard this promise many times. “The first plot of land had a temple on it. They demolished the temple and said that they will build the Tamil school t...
