Zaid urges PM to repeal ISA in open letter By SHAILA KOSHY KUALA LUMPUR: The continued arbitrary use of the Internal Security Act (ISA) in the face of public sentiment gives the impression that the Government is oppressive, and the ISA an instrument of oppression. “Its continued use does not bode well for a society that is struggling to find its place in the global arena. PETALING JAYA: DAP secretary general Lim Guan Eng has criticised the Tourism Ministry’s RM18mil move to start Internet TV to attract tourists as being too costly and a waste of public funds. “All you need is a good video camera. Malaysiakini (news portal) can do their Web TV for RM20,000, why do you need RM18mil?” he said. Lim said he was also made to understand that the cost took into account 100 documentaries that would be produced about the country. “Why do you need to produce so many? Do you think the tourists want to see so many?” he said. Selangor govt suspends Hamid By CHRISTINA TAN and CHRISTINA LOW SHAH ALAM: Ampang Jaya Muni­cipal Council (MPAJ) deputy president Hamid Hussain, who allegedly ordered that the Sri Maha­kaliaman temple be demolished, has been suspended for a week effective today. State Local Government, Research and Study committee chairman Ronnie Liu said Hamid was being suspended pending investigations. The decision to suspend him was made yesterday. He said the state three-man committee on non-Muslim religious affairs comprising Teresa Kok, Dr Xavier Jayakumar and himself has begun their investigations into the temple demolition. “We are expecting the investigation results by Monday and we will look into the next course of action after that,” he said when contacted yesterday. The 19-year-old temple near Kampung Tasek Tambahan, which was built on forest reserve land, was ordered to be destroyed by the MPAJ about two weeks ago. MIC protests against demolition SHAH ALAM: About 100 MIC members demonstrated here to protest the demolition of a Hindu temple by the Ampang Jaya Municipal council recently. The crowd, which included Indian NGOs, protested at the main gate of the Selangor secretariat building yesterday morning. Organiser T. Mohan, who is MIC Youth chief, said the PKR government had lied to the people that they would not tear down any places of worship. “They said no temples would be destroyed, what happened now?” Mohan told reporters the MIC was unhappy with the state government’s action to demolish the Sri Mahakaliaman temple after he presented a memorandum to Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim’s political secretary, Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad. Kapar MP to quit PKR if no action is taken KLANG: Kapar MP S. Manicka­vasagam has threatened to quit as the Selangor Parti Keadilan Rakyat liaison committee deputy chairman if no action is taken against council officers involved in a Hindu temple demolition exercise in Ampang re­­cently. Manickavasagam, who is also a PKR supreme council member, said he might even quit the party if he was not satisfied with action taken by the state government. He said action should be taken against the Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ) president, its en-forcement chief and other officers involved as the matter was not referred to the state govern- ment before the temple was demolished. “The council president also did not inform the two Indian representatives in the council’s board of the action.
