Samy urges Barisan to punish Hamidah KUALA LUMPUR: Barisan Nasional has been urged to take disciplinary action against Sungai Rapat assemblyman Hamidah Osman for insulting the Indian community at the Perak state assembly on Friday. MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu, in making the call, said the party condemned the state assemblyman’s action. “We urge the Barisan Nasional Supreme Council to take action against her,” he said in a statement here. Hamidah was reported to have asked Speaker V. Sivakumar if he agreed to disagree with the well-known fable of whether a snake or a man from a certain racial community should be killed first. SUJATA PUTRAJAYA: Parti Keadilan Raykat leaders decided Sunday morning that the party's de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim stay at the Turkish Embassy for his safety after he received death threats. His family visited him at the Embassy at Jalan U Thant Sunday evening, PKR vice-president Azmin Ali said. At a press conference earlier Sunday, Anwar's wife and PKR president Satin Seri Wan Azizah Ismail said the death threats had come less than a day after an aide of Anwar's had lodged a police report alleging he was sodomised by the one-time deputy prime minister. She said PKR had released pictures of the aide showing him with cabinet ministers and their high-ranking staff, which she claimed was evidence of political assassination. MAS raises surcharge By M. KRISHNAMOORTHY KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Airlines (MAS) is increasing fuel surcharge by 10% to 30% on all international sectors from today. For between Malaysia and India, the fuel surcharge for one-way will increase from RM288 to RM406; Malaysia and Australia/New Zealand, from RM457 to RM643; and Malaysia and Britain (from RM575 to RM771). A few days ago, MAS had forewarned that it would be a “very tough” ride ahead. MAS managing director Datuk Seri Idris Jala had said the increase in fuel surcharge would be “competitive”. Fuel accounts for 40% of an airline’s total cost and jet fuel hit a record US$173.55 (RM560.56) a barrel on May 27 before falling to US$161.85 (RM522.77) in Singapore last Friday.
