Waytha's passport revoked: Amnesty Mkini -May 16, 08 10:35am The government has revoked the passport of a Hindu Rights Action Force chairperson P Waythamoorthy, Amnesty International said on Thursday. Waythamoorthy, who has been living in London since he fled the country in December, has sought asylum in Britain, Amnesty's Washington-based Asia-Pacific advocacy director T Kumar told AFP.The activist had planned to visit Washington for talks with leaders of the US Congress and Amnesty and other rights groups, "but it has been put off because of his passport's cancelation", Kumar said. Waythamoorthy had sought the talks to highlight alleged discriminatory policies against minority ethnic Indian Malaysians as well as the arrest under the powerful Internal Security Act of five senior Hindraf members at home. The five, who led a massive anti-discrimination rally in Kuala Lumpur in November, are being held without trial and for an indefinite period. High achiever losing faith

I AM an SPM 2007 school leaver and it grieves me that having achieved 10A1s has got me nowhere in my homeland. I was rejected by the Public Services Department (PSD), Public Institutes of Higher Learning (IPTA) and matriculation programmes, while Petronas, Bank Negara and the Telekom Malaysia Foundation did not even call me for an interview – all of which has started me wondering if we can really make a difference through education. To put myself in the best position, I went all out in taking part in co-curricular activities. I represented my school in the national level Robotic Carnival 2007 and won the third prize in the national level Mathematics Carnival in 2006. I was a prefect in school, sub-editor on the school editorial board, homeroom president and Mandarin Club treasurer. In terms of community involvement, I was a student reporter at the Sin Chew Daily. My parents are government servants nearing retirement age. My father, tormented by renal failure, continues to work for a me...

Karpal Singh: Shabery should be ashamed

Karpal Singh: Shabery should be ashamed PETALING JAYA (May 15, 2008): Information Minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek should be the last person to label members of opposing parties switching sides as "political prostitutes" since he himself had done so, said DAP chairman Karpal Singh. Shabery also said only those addicted to prostitution would use such a method to achieve political satisfaction. Karpal Singh stressed that he himself did not subscribe to crossovers. "To me they are political kangaroos who betray the very people who voted them," he said. "Shabery appears to have a short memory," said Karpal Singh. "He, together with his political master Gua Musang MP Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah disbanded Semangat 46 and engaged in full-scale "political prostitution" by crossing over lock, stock and barrel to the Barisan Nasional," he added. Karpal Singh said Shabery and his compatriots in the now defunct Semangat 46 have no business now to spe...

Diabetics take heart

Diabetics take heart Lee Boon Siew KUALA LUMPUR (May 14, 2008): Diabetics who are also heart patients now have a new drug used for controlling blood sugar, that has been found to also reduce clogging of arteries, lower blood pressure and increase the amount of "good" cholesterol. Director of National Heart Foundation Datuk Dr Khoo Kah Lin said in a statement that a 30-month study involving 543 diabetic heart patients in 97 hospitals in North and South America discovered that pioglitazone caused a regression of coronary atherosclerosis, meaning less plaque was formed thus reducing blockage of the arteries. It also improved blood pressure and raised by 16% the patients’ level of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) or "good" cholesterol. Pioglitazone lowered triglycerides by 15% and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein by a whopping 45%. Khoo said results of the study were recently presented at the 57th annual meeting of the American College of Cardiology in Chicago by emine...
