Mount Kailash

Pilgrims of the Buddhist, Hindu, Jain and Tibetan Bön faiths come to Kailash to complete ritual walks around the base of the mountain. But a half-century of Chinese rule has crippled religious and cultural expression in Tibet. After years of complete religious repression, during which thousands of monasteries were destroyed and pilgrimage was forbidden, Tibet now struggles with cultural dilution as Chinese immigrate to the region with the help of government incentives. Most recently, the Chinese government has stepped up efforts to make Kailash a tourist attraction, channeling money into building infrastructure in this remote region, but without regard for the sanctity of the place.
