An Indian couple have had their children taken away by Norwegian social workers because they were feeding them with their hands and sleeping in the same bed as them.
Anurup and Sagarika Bhattacharya lost custody of their three-year-old son and one-year-old daughter eight months ago after authorities branded their behaviour inappropriate.
The drastic measure led to intervention from the Indian government who contacted Norwegian authorities in an a desperate attempt to return the children.

Norwegian Child Protection Services removed the youngsters from their home in May, 2011, leaving their parents horrified with the outcome of the report.
Father Anurup told Indian television channel NDTV: 'They told me ''why are you sleeping with the children in the same bed?'’.
'(I told them) this is also a purely cultural issue. We never leave the children in another room and say goodnight to them.'

Anurup added: 'Feeding a child with the hand is normal in Indian tradition and when the mother is feeding with a spoon there could be phases when she was overfeeding the child.
'They said it was force feeding. These are basically cultural differences.'

Their one-year-old daughter is currently staying with a separate family to her brother's temporary carers

Mrs Bhattacharya said: 'My son was sleeping with my husband. They said he should sleep separately from your son.'
The parents have been told that they can only see their children twice a year, for an hour during each visit until the kids turn 18 when they will no longer be bound by the current restrictions under current Norwegian law.
Despite the Indian government's intervention, Norwegian officials are refusing to meet the request for any further explanation.

Authorities complained that mother Sagarika should not have been feeding her children with her hands

Norway's Child Protective Service has come under much scrutiny in the past for excessive behaviour in their handling of child cruelty.
Lawyer Svein Kjetil Lode Svendsen said: 'There has been a report in UN in 2005 which criticized Norway for taking too many children in public care.
'The amount was 12,500 children and Norway is a small country.'
With the Bhattacharyas' visas set to expire in March, they have revealed that they will be forced to stay against their will until the return of their infants.

Teresa Kok: Police control of carolling is 'abuse'

DAP wants the home minister to explain why further conditions are being imposed on Christmas carolling, such as the need to provide Bukit Aman and the National Security Council with full details.

"The supposed current need for further information and restrictions on carollers, such as the requirement to provide the police with details of names and contacts of home owners, who the churches’ carolling groups will visit, is simply unnecessary and an abuse of power by the authorities," said DAP national organising secretary Teresa Kok (left) today.

"I urge Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein to clarify why the supposed need for the churches to inform Bukit Aman and the National Security Council of this insignificant information.

"This should not be practised nor tolerated by the government of Malaysia and further clarification must be delivered by the authorities should this episode be merely an act of overzealous police personnel,” said the Selangor senior exco in a statement.

She cited two cases of churches in Klang apparently receiving a memo from the district police requesting details of carolling activities, such as the homeowners’ information that she said was "rather perplexing and indicates an attempt to clamp down and infringe on religious freedoms".

"The police must not use politically motivated manoeuvres to hinder long-held customs, such as the tradition of carolling among Christians, which has been an exercise of goodwill and peace for decades in our country during the joyous season of Christmas," said Kok.

Peaceful Assembly Bill comes under UN fire

A group of UN human rights experts has warned that the Peaceful Assembly Bill not only restricts the right to peaceful assembly, including street protests, but also conditional access for media to public gatherings.

UN Special Rapporteur Maina Kiai voiced “deep regret” that the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) or civil society was not meaningfully consulted in the drafting of the bill.

In a statement released by the group, Maina (right) said the bill contains a vague definition of assembly and also places broad restrictions and conditions on gatherings, which he described as giving “excessive authority” and power to law enforcement officials and the home minister.

“Many of these restrictions are not justifiable under international law. It also gives discretion to the police to make any form of recording of assemblies,” said Maina who is the UN Special Rapporteur on the rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and of association.

The bill was tabled for its first reading by Minister in the Prime Minister's Department on Nov 21 and it was passed hastily with some amendments less than a fortnight ago, on Nov 29.

The bill was passed amidst a walkout by the opposition MPs after debating the bill, and also a protest by more than 1,000 lawyers on the same day.

The bill also includes a prohibition on non-citizens and citizens under the age of 21 to assemble peacefully.

Malaysia is a member of the UN Human Rights Council until 2013.

Alarmed by restrictions

Another Special Rapporteur, Margaret Sekaggya (left), said she is alarmed by the provision prohibiting citizens below 21 years of age to assemble.

“Political and social participation through peaceful protests are not only an educational experience for children, youth and students but also an investment for society as a whole,” she exclaimed.

Frank La Rue, another Special Rapporteur on the right to freedom of expression, has urged the Malaysian government to seriously reconsider the adoption of the bill.

“The ability of all individuals to express themselves freely, including in the form of peaceful assemblies, is a litmus test for the level of democracy in any country.”

Fracois Crepeau (left), a Special Rapporteur on the human rights of migrants called for an urgent review of the bill.

“Everyone has the right to freedom of assembly and association, without distinction of any kind, including nationality,” said Crepeau.

All the cited experts report to the UN Human Rights Council, Geneva, in an independent and unpaid capacity.

Last July, the office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights voiced concern over the apparent use of excessive force against protesters on the July 9 Bersih 2.0 rally.

I was walking around in a Target store, when I saw the lady in the cashier hand this little boy some money back.

The boy couldn't have been more than 8 or 9 years old.

The Cashier said, 'I'm sorry, but you don't have enough money to buy this doll.'

Then the little boy turned to the old woman next to him: ''Nanny,
are you sure I don't have enough money?''

The old lady replied: ''You know that you don't have enough money to buy this doll, my dear.''

Then she asked him to stay there for just 5 minutes while she went to look around for a cheaper one. She left quickly.

The little boy was still holding the doll in his hand.

Finally, I walked toward him and I asked him who he wished to give this doll to.

'It's the doll that my sister loved most and wanted so much for Christmas.

She was sure that Santa Claus would bring it to her.'

I replied to him that maybe Santa Claus would bring it to her after all, and not to worry.

But he replied to me sadly. 'No, Santa Claus can't bring it to her where she is now. I have to give the doll to my mummy so that she can give it to my sister when she goes there.'

His eyes were so sad while saying this. 'My Sister has gone to be with God. Daddy says that Mummy is going to see God very soon too, so I thought that she could take the doll with her to give it to my sister .''

My heart nearly stopped.

The little boy looked up at me and said: 'I told daddy to tell mummy not to go yet. I need her to wait until I come back from the shops.'

Then he showed me a very nice photo of himself. He was laughing. He then told me 'I want mummy to take my picture with her so she won't forget me.'

'I love my mummy and I wish she didn't have to leave me, but daddy says that she has to go to be with my little sister.'

Then he looked again at the doll with sad eyes, very quietly.

I quickly reached for my wallet and said to the boy. 'Suppose we check again, just in case you do have enough money for the doll!''

'OK' he said, 'I hope I do have enough.' I added some of my money to his without him seeing and we started to count it. There was enough for the doll and even some spare money.

The little boy said: 'Thank you God for giving me enough money!'

Then he looked at me and added, 'I asked last night before I went to sleep for God to make sure I had enough money to buy this doll, so that mummy could give it to my sister . He heard me!''

'I also wanted to have enough money to buy a white rose for my mummy, but I didn't dare to ask God for too much.. But He gave me enough to buy the doll and a white rose..''

'My mummy loves white roses.'

As I saw the old lady returning, I left with my basket as to not cause a scene.

I finished my shopping in a totally different state of mind from when I started.

I couldn't get the little boy out of my mind.
Then I remembered a local news paper article two days ago, which mentioned a drunk man in a truck, who hit a car occupied by a young woman and a little girl.
The little girl died right away, and the mother was left in a critical state.
The family had to decide whether to remove the life-sustaining machine, because the young woman would not be able to recover from the coma.

Was this the family of the little boy?

Two days after this encounter with the little boy, I read in the news paper that the young woman had passed away.

I couldn't stop myself as I bought a bunch of white roses and I went to the funeral home where the body of the young woman was for people to see and make last wishes before her burial.

She was there, in her coffin, holding a beautiful white rose in her hand with the photo of the little boy and the doll placed over her chest.

I left the place, teary-eyed, feeling that my life had been changed for ever.. The love that the little boy had for his mother and his sister is still, to this day, hard to imagine.

And in a fraction of a second, a drunk driver had taken all this away from him.

Kami sedang memungut suara ibu bapa dan rakyat Malaysia yang menyokong agar PPSMI diteruskan. Data ini bertujuan untuk membuktikan sokongan untuk merayu kepada Kerajaan agar memberikan pilihan untuk meneruskan PPSMI.

Rakyat harus didahulukan dan pencapaian harus diutamakan agar negara berkemampuan melonjak ke taraf negara pendapatan tinggi secepat mungkin.

HITV Therapy: Cancer Cure Is Now In Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 24 (Bernama) -- There is a new hope for cancer patients in Malaysia.

A vaccine widely known for treating late-stage cancer -- almost all types of cancer, except leukemia -- is now available in the country.

The Human Initiated Therapeutic Vaccine (HITV), which was only available in Japan previously, is able to completely destroy microscopic and tiny nests of cancer cells, thus preventing any future recurrences.

Discovered in 2005 by Dr Kenichiro Hasumi, a Japanese physician and researcher, HITV is an autologus (patient derived) active cell-based immunotherapy for metastatic or late-stage cancer patients.

It is based on immunology that harnesses human immune system's innate and adaptive ability to combat diseases.

Dr Hasumi, founder and chairman of Hasumi International Research Foundation in the United States, has dedicated more than 40 years of his life to find a cure to cancer.

Speaking at a media conference Monday, Dr Hasumi said the therapy was highly effective for patients suffering from late-stage cancer, when used in combination with radiotherapy.

"The use of tomotherapy (a type of radiation therapy) is important in this protocol. It can target the tumors precisely in one sweep, while reducing the radiation exposure to the surrounding tissues," he said.

The treatment includes harvesting immune cells from the patient, culturing them in the laboratory to become immature dentritic cells, and then re-introducing them into the patient's body, through injection into the tumor.

HITV course takes about three weeks, with 10 days of actual treatment. Patients will have to be examined with PET-CT scan after the treatment periodically, to monitor the tumors for regression.

While the treatment was only available in Japan, nine Malaysians suffering late stage of various types of cancer have decided to give it a try. Five of them have shown complete response.

They include Goh Sai Wah, 58, a non-smoker who was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer with extensive spread to the spine and bone in May, last year.

She underwent the HITV therapy in Japan on Oct 30, last year and in her follow-up check, six weeks later, almost all cancer cells had disappeared.

Now, 365 days later, and counting, she is very much alive and well.

Dr Hasumi said, since late stage cancer was a very difficult stage to cure, he hoped that in future, there would be innovations to cure cancer in the early stages.

HITV therapy costs about RM200,000, if patients decide to have it in Japan. In Malaysia, it will cost about RM150,000.

The therapy is now available at the Mahameru International Medical Centre but medical practitioners are trying their very best to introduce HITV to all hospitals in the Klang Valley, in an effort to give late-stage cancer patients a new hope in life.

About 200 mat rempit held a noisy demonstration at the historic Clock Tower near the Penang state legislative assembly building today, demanding a 'racing track' for their use.
The group, led by Shahabuddin Ahmad - a representative of Pertubuhan Islam Gabungan Amal - lined the area with their motorcycles about 1pm and honked noisily for about 15 minutes before the police dispersed them.
Their mission appeared political as most of the bikers were wearing yellow T-shirts with the words ‘LGE racist’ - a reference to Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng - and ‘Save Penang’.
They also unfurled banners reading Mahu litar lumba (We want a racing track).
Five protestors, including Shahabuddin, were detained by the police who had been trailing some members of the group from Komtar, the state's administrative building.
It is learnt that the mat rempit had proceeded from Penang Road to the state legislative assembly building along Light Street.
During the arrests, a minor scuffle broke out between the police and several protestors who were shouting. One threw his helmet on the ground.
Parts of the Komtar building had earlier been defaced with graffiti reading Guan Eng tipu Melayu (Guan Eng has lied to the Malays), but it is not known if the group was behind this.
Georgetown OCPD Gan Kon Meng said the group had planned to hand a memorandum to Lim over several issues affecting them.
"We allowed them to submit the memorandum because we are a democracy. But if (any gathering) is not peaceful, it can create chaos and cause lost of property," Gan said.
Those held will be investigated for illegal assembly under Section 27(5) of the Police Act.
Told of complaints of police violence during the arrest, he said it was probably because the protestors had resisted enforcement action.
'Political agenda'
However, Komtar assemblyperson and Lim's political secretary Ng Wei Aik (right) was upset with Gan for not doing his work professionally.
Ng said Gan should explain why he allowed the 'illegal' protest when this was clearly "a politically-oriented rally".
"Asking for a racing track was merely an excuse. I do not think it is related. All demonstrations (here) are easily linked to Umno," he alleged.
"Someone sold Umno's agenda to them. If it is not political, why do they say ‘LGE racist,’ when mat rempit are only mostly interested in racing?"

Man says wife pushed, dragged and injured by police

KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 19, 2011): A 37-year-old businessman alleged that police pushed, dragged and injured his wife, a Chinese national, in an anti-vice raid after mistaking her for a prostitute.
Loh Thean Soo, from Jalan Ipoh, claimed police dragged his wife for several metres 'like an animal’ around 11.30pm on Saturday.
“I went to have dinner with my wife at a restaurant in Jalan Loke Yew and after dinner, my wife went to the car to get my cigarettes when a team of plainclothes police officers ambushed her and pushed her to the ground,” Loh said at a press conference called by DAP Klang legal bureau chairman Tan today.
His wife Ming Daimei, 34, was also present at the press conference and showed the injuries she sustained on her leg.
“After my wife fell, the policemen dragged her like an animal and placed her in a van,” he said.
“I tried to intervene but they ignored me.
“My wife sustained serious injuries on her leg and was bleeding while she was detained overnight at the Dang Wangi police station," Loh said, adding that he went to the police station with his marriage certificate and pleaded with the officers to release his wife but to no avail.
“They even refused to speak to me and treated me and my wife like criminals.

Loh also alleged that he was later accosted by a man claiming he could ‘settle’ the matter with the police and demanded RM2,000 which he claimed to have paid to secure the release of his wife.

Ming was released at 5pm the following day with blood still oozing from her injured leg.
Loh and his wife, accompanied by Tan, on Monday, lodged a report at the Jinjang police station alleging police brutality.
“I want the police to tell me why they detained my wife and why they refused to listen to me despite me producing my marriage certificate.

Malaysia blocks broadcast urging locals to vote

KUALA LUMPUR--The ICT industry regulator has instructed local TV stations to remove a broadcast of a public service announcement encouraging all Malaysians to exercise their right to vote in the next elections, a local news portal has reported.
According to The Malaysian Insider, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) earlier this week directed local broadcasters not to use a video produced by local musician, Pete Teo, just days after it was first aired on Sept. 16.
The report cited an industry source to say that the MCMC e-mailed both Astro and Media Prima, the country's two largest broadcasters, instructing them that the video clip should not be aired because "Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah speaks about the country having 'many problems'" and it features opposition leaders. Razaleigh, a prince who hails from the north-eastern state of Kelantan, is a popular politician with the ruling coalition Barisan Nasional.

Video urges M'sians to exercise right to vote

The video, named "Undilah" (which means "Please Vote" in Malay), also features several prominent oppositions including Nurul Izzah Anwar, the eldest daughter of former deputy prime minister Anwar Ibrahim, and a Member of Parliament for Lembah Pantai, a surburban area in Kuala Lumpur.
Another local broadcaster, NTV7, also aired the video but MCMC sent the e-mail only to the two major broadcasters which operate the majority of television channels in Malaysia.
Undilah was an attempt by Teo, an independent filmmaker and musician, to highlight the need for all Malaysians above the voting age of 21 to exercise their constitutional right to vote. Shot in black-and-white, the video features Razaleigh highlighting that there are problems in the country and also shows other Malaysians of various ethnic origins--speaking in Chinese, Malay and Tamil--encouraging viewers to vote.
The country is not due to call for general elections until 2013 but it is widely believed the incumbent government will call for one within six months to a year.
When contacted, Teo said he had no idea why the regulators deemed it necessary to block his video. "Perhaps they live in neighbourhoods where there are no problems at all and think we are misrepresenting the country," he told ZDNet Asia in an e-mail.
He believed the video was yanked because it gave equal representation to opposition and government figures. "Again, I have no idea why they should find balanced representation of opposing political parties objectionable in a public service announcement," he said.
He noted that Prime Minister Najib Razak just last week made some concessions to relax media control and promised to review media laws to make Malaysia a vibrant democracy.
In a national broadcast on Sept. 15, Najib had pledged to abolish certain security laws, the most significant of which was the Internal Security Act, and review other laws pertaining to media control such as the Printing Presses and Publications Act.
"A week later, MCMC bans an independent and non-partisan public service announcement encouraging the nation to exercise their democratic rights," Teo said. "I find that as disappointing as it is ironic."
Ong Kian Ming, political scientist and lecturer at the UCSI University's faculty of Economics and Policy Science, noted that MCMC, like most other regulators, usually errs on the side of caution, especially in cases concerning sensitive political issues.
"Assuming the report is true, one should not be surprised by this move," Ong said in an e-mail. "The very fact that the Undilah video was put online is an indication that those who made the video did not expect it to have much airplay."
Ong said such issues pointed to a larger structural challenge Najib would face if he was serious about introducing greater liberalization in the local political sphere. "For there to be a mindset change that will prevent such moves in the future, there needs to be a concerted effort to change the personnel in these ministries, perhaps starting with the ministers in charge of these ministries. Najib cannot do this on his own," he said.
Concurring, Wan Saiful Wan Jan, chief executive of political and economic think-tank, IDEAS Malaysia, said in an e-mail interview: "[If the report was true], it shows there are elements within the government who are not as forward thinking as Najib [who] should show that he is serious...[and] clear about the direction he wants to to take and make everyone commit it to."

Serious flaws in Ledang electoral roll

Johor DAP has claimed to have found thousands of registered voters in the Ledang parliamentary constituency who have either incomplete or no information at all in the databases of the Election Commission (EC) and National Registration Department (NRD).

They include 417 voters whose names are missing from the NRD database.

This latest flaw was exposed at a press conference called in Muar today by Bakri MP Er Teck Hwa (centre in photo), who was accompanied by Johor DAP secretary Tan Chen Choon and Youth leader Ee Chin Li.

They said a 17-member task force formed by the party had detected several flaws in the electoral roll of Ledang, a semi-rural constituency with some 60,000 voters:

A total of 1,824 voters have no record in the online database of both the EC and NRD.
A voter is listed as a permanent resident in the NRD database.
A total of 2,195 voters have no address in the EC's database.
The addresses of 35,064 or 59.14 percent of the voters in the electoral roll are incomplete.
A total of 417 voters have only MyKad numbers listed in the NRD database - without names.
A total of 6,700 voters have no record in the NRD database. They are listed as 'no application' and 'invalid number'.

Ee said these problems raised serious questions about national security.

"Why is a permanent resident given voting rights? How many permanent residents have been registered as voters, and how many times have they voted? How did the EC determine the constituencies of voters who don't have addresses?" he asked.

In a previous complaint, PAS had found some 1,000 permanent residents on the roll, which the NRD and EC clarified was due to "technical negligence".

EC chairperson Abdul Aziz Yusof had said then that the NRD had neglected to update its database to show that these permanent residents had been granted citizenship.

'Horrible blunder'

Ee was particularly scathing on cases of voters whose names were missing from the NRD database, describing this as a "horrible blunder" that the EC is obliged to explain.

"The NRD website showed their status as 'MyKad has been collected'. Does it mean they collect their Mykad first and fill in their names later? How the EC can register voters with only the MyKad number but without their name into the electoral roll?"

Ee expressed worry that the 6,700 voters with no record in NRD database could be a fatal loophole in national security, and called on the Home Ministry to answer for this.

He also dismissed the argument by Abdul Aziz that errors in the electoral roll represent just 0.0001 percent of the total 12.4 million registered voters.

"Every single vote is indispensable. How can the EC view voters as a set of numbers? As citizen, every voter has voting rights that cannot be compromised."

The task force would continue to scrutinise other constituencies in the Johor, Ee added.

Tee Keat stands by 'Chinese marginalised' remarks

Former MCA president Ong Tee Keat today confirmed telling US diplomats that ethnic Chinese in the country were marginalised but reiterated that he was merely conveying the sentiments of the minority community.

"It is worth reiterating that the comments purportedly made by me was largely my observation and assessment of the Chinese community's sentiment and perception pursuant to the statement of marginalisation by (Minister Mentor) Lee Kuan Yew of Singapore," he said.

Lee had in September 2006 told journalists at the sidelines of a World Bank-International Monetary Fund meeting in Singapore that ethnic Chinese in both Malaysia and Indonesia were marginalised - a provocative statement that resonated with a significant segment of the Chinese populace across the Causeway.

"Our neighbours both have problems with their Chinese. They are successful. They are hardworking and, therefore, they are systematically marginalised," Lee was quoted as saying.

US diplomats had then sought Ong's opinion on the comments, who remarked that the Chinese community in Malaysia were well aware that they were marginalised.

'Leftovers', 'crumbs' are metaphoric descriptions

In a statement to Malaysiakini today, Ong denied that his description of "leftovers" and "crumbs" referred to government projects, explaining that they were something that was expressed by the Chinese business community.

"The metaphoric descriptions of 'leftovers' and 'crumbs' were the exact words I quoted from certain corporate personalities that were coincidentally shared by the petty traders in my own constituency over the issue in September 2006," he said.

His comments come after Malaysiakini reported a confidential cable between Washington and its embassy in Kuala Lumpur that was released by whistleblower site Wikileaks last week, detailing Ong's meeting with US embassy officials.

According to the cable, Ong was quoted as saying that "there was once a day in Malaysia when MCA would get the leftovers, but now we are just hoping to get some crumbs from the Umno table".

Ong was VP when he made the remarks

Standing by his statement to US diplomats, the Pandan MP conceded that he had kept his views private because he knew it would raise eyebrows within the MCA leadership.

"Throughout the conversation, the only view of mine expressed was the prior assessment of the Chinese support for BN/MCA in the 12th general election. I was not at all optimistic then.

"Unfortunately, what I described as 'plummeting Chinese support for the party' really came true as an enormous wave of political tsunami in the 2008 poll later."

In what appears to be a challenge to the current MCA president Chua Soi Lek, Ong said that it was up to MCA to decide if they share the sentiment of the Chinese community.

"As to whether MCA shares the (Chinese) community's perception of being marginalised or otherwise, the current party leadership should have the courage and wisdom to answer. After all, I have no role to play in it anymore," he said.

Ong was a MCA vice-president when he made the remarks in 2006 and later went on to helm the party's presidency before being ousted by Chua in 2010.

Dood: Amazing what one can get away with if one is promoting Umno-BN's agenda. When a newspaper publishes a dining supplement during Ramadan that featured non-halal outlets, certain people bay for blood.

But apparently it's perfectly okay to portray as "facts" things like Christianity permitting prostitution.

I challenge those who think Umno-BN is being "fair" in their treatment to try publishing the same report as in Sinar Harian or Utusan Malaysia by substituting "Kristian" with "Islam".

David Dass: Islam or Muslim bashing is unnecessary. The irresponsible and malicious writing and publishing of vicious and ridiculous nonsense is the work of a few. These few should be brought to book. Most Malays would not subscribe to such nonsense. It is for our leaders to distance themselves from such acts.

These acts are designed to set Malays against non-Malays, Muslims against non-Muslims. Do not rise to the bait and by your responses alienate all Malays and all Muslims. Christians are like everybody else. Christianity abhors sin. Sexual discipline is a Christian virtue as it is a virtue among people of all religions.

Prostitution for the most part occurs because of economic necessity. And occurs when the state fails to provide sufficient jobs and food and sustenance. Who in this case has committed the sin? The prostitute or the corrupt who steal from the state?

It is good that the article has been withdrawn and an apology issued. But the question must be asked - why was it written and why was it published in the first instance? It reveals such a distorted, perverted and ignorant view of Christians and Christianity.

Recent articles reek of xenophobia as they point out the dangers of Muslims interacting with non-Muslims. And in doing so, not only do they criticise and condemn non-Muslims as decadent and immoral but also suggest that there is something wrong with Indonesian society. These people have lost their bearings.

Anonymous_3dbe: Many Muslims have mistaken between Western culture and Christian culture. This is just like saying most Muslims are terrorists because some are involved in terrorism.

Tailek: I would recommend that Sinar Harian send an investigative reporter to all the karaoke joints, massage parlours and night clubs and see how many Malay GROs (guest relations officers) and massage girls work in such places.

Ferdtan: Since Utusan Malaysia has lost creditability with its readers with their numerous unbridled untruths appearing in many of their articles, the baton is now conveniently passed to Sinar Harian to do an 'execution job' on controversial issue of apostasy of Muslims by so-called 'Christian apostasy movement'.

Sinar Harian, formed only in 2006, is owned by Kumpulan Karangkraf. The use of this up-and-coming tabloid could be because of its popularity in the Malay-dominated east coast of Kelantan,Trengganu and Pahang.

This article, including the one recently, are quite uncharacteristic of their claims as to its impartial and objective news content. Expect more articles of this sort to come out.

The bogeyman: read Christianity, appears to be the winning weapon of Umno in the war of perception in the hearts and minds of the Muslim, particularly in the rural corner of the country. Pakatan Rakyat would be well-advised to take heed of this before it gets out of hand.

Why go to the Temple ???

A 'devotee' wrote a letter to the editor of an indian newspaper and complained that it made no sense to go to the Temple . 'I've gone for 30 years now, he wrote, and in that time I have heard something like 3,000 mantras.

But for the life of me, I can't remember a single one of them. So, I think I'm wasting my time and the Gurus are wasting theirs by giving services at all.

This started a real controversy in the 'Letters to the Editor' column, much to the delight of the editor. It went on for weeks until someone wrote this clincher: I've been married for 30 years now. In that time my wife has cooked some 32,000 meals.

But, for the life of me, I cannot recall the those meals. But I do know this... They all nourished me and gave me the strength I needed to do my work.

If my wife had not given me these meals, I would be physically dead today. Likewise, if I had not gone to the Temple for nourishment, I would be spiritually dead today!

When you are DOWN to nothing.... God is UP to something! Faith sees the invisible, believes the incredible and receives the impossible!

Thank God for our physical AND our spiritual nourishment!

Mapping the brains activity after Kriya Yoga

In the living brain, millions of nerve cells communicate with each other by emitting tiny electrical impulses. In this way, the brain is electrically active night and day throughout ones life. This activity can be registered as oscillations (popularly called brain waves) by placing electrodes on the scalp, amplifying the signals and displaying them on a computer monitor. This method of measuring is called electroencephalo-graphy (EEG). The brain oscillates at different rates (frequency) depending on the state of consciousness, just as the height of the waves (amplitude) can vary.
There is a direct correlation between a persons activity or level of attention and his brain wave frequency (see fig. 1). During unconscious states (e.g. deep sleep) the slow delta waves with high amplitudes appear in the EEG. In the half conscious state, between wakefulness and sleep, theta waves are often dominant, and during the wakeful, mentally relaxed state with closed eyes, alpha waves dominate in most people. Finally, the high frequency beta waves with small amplitude appear during conscious wakeful activity. Thus the EEG measurements can verify whether a person is conscious (alpha and beta waves) or unconscious (delta and theta waves). The lower the EEG frequency, the more unconscious the state (fig. 1).

The four types of brain waves

Beta waves (13-36 oscillations (or waves) per second (Hz)). This is the brain rhythm in the normal wakeful state associated with thinking, problem solving and active attention directed towards the outer world. Beta waves may be classified as beta 1 (13-20 Hz) and beta 2 (20-36 Hz). Mental tensions, excitement and anxiety can increase both amplitude and frequency of the beta rhythms. This can cause a shift from beta1 to beta2.
Alpha waves (8-13 Hz). Alpha is the most dominant of all brain rhythms. Most people have some alpha activity in their EEG, especially when they close their eyes, turn the attention inwards and relax. This increases the amplitude of the alpha waves. Alpha waves, which signify conscious awareness, are the "bridge" or "entrance ticket" to the unconscious, which is represented by even lower frequencies (theta and delta).
Theta waves (4-8 Hz). Theta is the dominant brain rhythm of small children. In adults, theta waves normally appear only during dreaming or drowsiness, as well as during strong emotions. Theta waves are formed deep in the brain and reflect unconscious activity associated with emotions and dreams. Both when one comes close to unconscious memories during deep meditation and close to repressed feelings in therapy the theta activity tends to increase.
In order to have conscious access to and remembrance of the unconscious content, alpha waves must be present in the EEG. Without alpha the unconscious content remains unconscious.
The presence of a certain amount of theta combined with alpha in the EEG recorded during rest may signify personal insight and creativity.
Delta waves (0,5-4 Hz). Delta is seen in new born babies and in adults during deep sleep. These slow rhythms are associated with basic survival functions deeply seated in the brain. During psychotherapy, where patients relive their own birth, the appearance of delta waves has been observed. Delta waves are associated with the deepest states of consciousness. Some consider that delta signifies contact with the collective unconscious. Delta rhythms combined with alpha can reflect an inner intuitive, empathetic radar, a kind of sixth sense.

Purpose of the Study

We wanted to study the effects of Kriya Yoga on the brains activity (EEG). In scientific literature there are often reports of an increase in alpha and theta waves during and after various forms of meditation. The ancient Tantric Kriya Yoga is a powerful method for awakening and expanding consciousness, as well as for strengthening the vital and psychic energy. We therefore anticipated that the EEG measurements before and after a single Kriya Yoga session would show significant changes. Furthermore, we wanted to chart the brains activity on coloured brain maps (see fig. 4 and 5) during the distinct changes in consciousness that occur in connection with Kriya Yoga.

Results

Yoga teachers from the Scandinavian Yoga and Meditation School - all with many years experience of Kriya Yoga - participated in the research. EEG measurements were taken immediately before and after two hours of Kriya Yoga from eight electrodes, four over the left side of the brain and four over the right, placed on the scalp with the aid of elastic bands. The amplified EEG signals were transmitted to a computer, displayed on a screen and simultaneously stored on a hard disk. Subsequently the EEG data were analysed for distribution of delta, theta, alpha and beta rhythms in the EEG.
Following the meditation, a significant rise of alpha and theta rhythms in the brain was observed in ten out of eleven subjects. For some, the alpha waves more than doubled. The increase of these rhythms was greatest in the rear part of the brain (parietal regions), where both alpha and theta rhythms rose by an average of 40% (see fig. 2). There was a general tendency for these rhythms to spread from the rear part of the brain forwards. In ten of the eleven right handed people, the alpha increased more in the right than in the left side of the temporal regions (fig. 3).
The significance of these changes will be discussed below. All the above mentioned results are statistically significant and therefore cannot be ascribed to coincidence.

		With mentally healthy human beings, an ideal R/L ratio is 1,05 - 1,10 - a little higher (culturally determined?) activity in the left compared to the right side. During deep relaxation, though, human beings come nearer to a balance of 1,00 between the brain halves. On the other hand, with neurotic and psychiatric patients, a R/L ratio far below 1,00 is found. The greater the mental disturbance, the lower the ratio: People suffering from anxiety neurosis, for instance, show values from 0,93 to extremely low values from 0,50 to 0,60 where you find schizophrenic paranoiacs (Hoffmann,1982).

Better contact with emotions and the subconscious

The considerable increase in alpha and theta activity in most regions of the brain after meditation (fig. 4) indicates that the brain is deeply relaxed and focused following Kriya Yoga. It also shows that through the meditation the subjects have obtained a better contact with their subconscious and their emotions.
The great increase of alpha in the right temporal lobe is an interesting finding. Recent research in the US has shown that depressed, introvert people have more alpha in the left fronto-temporal region, while optimistic, extrovert people have more alpha in the right side. According to the American research, an increase of alpha in the right side, as found in this study of Kriya Yoga, counteracts stress and depression.
Several scientific studies have demonstrated that theta rhythms in the EEG (mixed with alpha) correlate with the appearance of previously unconscious feelings, images and memories. Brain researchers claim that a person in the high alpha/theta state is able to confront and integrate unconscious processes.
This knowledge from modern research supports the experience that yogis have had from Kriya Yoga over thousands of years, that the meditative state, characterised by high alpha/theta activity, can bring about a release or "cleansing" of unconscious material in a person. This study demonstrates that Kriya Yoga is an extremely effective technique for raising the alpha/theta activity in the EEG and therefore it also strengthens the associated positive effects.

After two hours of practising Kriya Yoga, both the alpha and theta activity has risen considerably. This shows that the subject is more relaxed after the meditation and in better contact with his/her feelings and his/her subconscious.

	These brain maps are made on the basis of approximately 60 seconds recording of the brain waves from eight EEG channels during rest. Four electrodes are placed on the left side, four on the right side (and a reference electrode on the top of the head) (see fig. 2.). A brain map is constructed on the basis of a frequency analyser which shows the distribution in the brain of delta, theta, alpha and beta waves.
As shown in fig.5, a brain map is made up of seven oval pictures, which with various colours indicate the distribution in the brain of a specific EEG parameter. These pictures depict the brain as seen from above, where the small tip is the position of the nose. Most interesting are the five pictures to the right, which show the distribution of delta, theta, alpha, beta-1 and beta-2 waves. The individual pictures show, in accordance with the tall vertical colour scale, the brain waves of the mean amplitude beneath each of the eight electrodes. Thus, the dark blue colour indicates a very small amplitude, while the red and white colours indicate maximum amplitude. The two oval pictures to the left on the brain map display respectively the distribution of the mean alpha frequency and distribution of the total amplitude regardless of frequency (0,5 -36 Hz).

Comparing Kriya Yoga with other states Four examples of brain maps which show an increasing degree of contact with the subconscious. The strongly repressed person (a) has poor contact, while the meditating person (d) has the best contact with his/her subconscious. NB. These four brain maps come from various independent studies, fig. d. is from previous research done on some of the schools teachers where the measurements were taken during Kriya Yoga. Present research, however, measures the difference before and after Kriya Yoga meditation (see fig. 4.).
	a. Repressed - Extremely low alpha and theta indicates emotional blocking and poor contact with the subconscious.
	b. Normal - Moderate alpha together with some theta shows a good balance between conscious and unconscious activity with some degree of contact with the subconscious.
	c. Hypnosis - High theta activity during deep hypnosis shows activation of the unconscious. Low to medium alpha shows that there is little or no conscious experience of what is happening in the subconscious.
	d. Kriya Yoga - High theta activity during Kriya Yoga meditation shows activation of the unconscious at the same time as the very high alpha reflects a strong concentrated conscious awareness. There is optimal contact with feelings and the subconscious.

Four more ex-soldiers admit to postal vote fraud

Postal vote manipulation has been a common practice in the military for many years - so it seems - now that more retired military personnel are speaking up.

Now, four ex-military personnel have confessed to committing election fraud - the same way an ex-army man said he did so earlier this month.

The four, who had served at army and air force bases across the country, say they marked thousands of postal votes in three separate general elections between 1978 and 1999.

The four - Major (Rtd) Risman Mastor (right), Kamarulzaman Ibrahim, Mohamed Nasir Ahmad and Mohd Kamil Omar - said they were ordered by their commanding officers to mark postal votes for the hundreds and thousands of personnel who were out in the field.

Their expose today is the second after an ex-army man came forward earlier this month, making a similar claim that he was ordered to mark postal votes for other personnel.

Kamarulzaman, who was a clerk working at the Terendak army camp in Malacca, said he was ordered to spend three days marking thousands of ballot papers during the 1986 general election.

The 53-year-old said he was given three pens of different colours, which he used alternately to sign the postal votes in the absence of the army personnel who were on their tour of duty.

“For example, I would use a blue pen to sign for one serviceman and a black pen to sign for his wife. I was also ordered to mark votes for the opposition,” he said at a press conference hosted at the PAS headquarters by the party's youth wing.

When asked how many postal votes he signed, Kamarulzaman said he could not remember the exact number but was sure that it ran into the thousands.

“If you want to say how many, let's just say my hand went numb (from signing the ballot papers). I basically voted for soldiers from all over the country.”

'It was the wrong thing to do'

Kamil, a retired Air Force commando based at the Butterworth Air Force base, claimed he was offered a “reward” if he complied with the order to mark a box full of postal votes during the 1999 general election.

The 21-year veteran however refused to carry out the order, saying that he realised it was not right for him to mark ballots for his colleagues.

“They gave me a box, and expected me to mark all the ballots in 30 minutes. I realised it was wrong,” said the 49-year-old, adding that he has no idea what the “reward” was since he did not carry out the order.

Nasir, 50, who was a clerk based in Sandakan during the 1986 general election, said he and another colleague were told to split over 900 postal votes between them to be marked on behalf of their fellow soldiers.

He pointed out that being in the military, orders are orders and that soldiers were “not too bothered” about politics.

“Even after retirement, we didn't care so much about politics. But when Bersih came about, we started to realise that what we did was not right,” he said.

Risman stressed that this practice went as far back as the 1978 general election, when he and nine others were ordered to go through around 200 sacks - each containing 10 postal votes - during his time at the Kampung Sawah army camp in Port Dickson.

“I did it just that one time... I don't remember the figures but I believe there were about 10 (ballots) in each sack. In effect there were just 10 of us actually voting,” he said.

Even as the BN and Pakatan Rakyat trade barbs over the proposed parliamentary select committee on electoral reform, more flaws are being exposed in the electoral rolls by political parties and members of public.

The latest discovery by a PAS supporter shows several registered voters in Kedah having MyKad numbers that do not exist.

This information is posted on a Facebook page registered to a Pengundi PAS Kedah (Kedah PAS voter) and is accompanied by screen-capture images (left) of the search result from the Election Commission's (EC) website.

It shows the seventh and eighth digits of the MyKad numbers of three voters are listed as '00'. These two digits are used to indicate the place of birth of the MyKad holder.

According to the National Registration Department (NRD) website, which lists the codes for states in Malaysia and foreign nations, the code '00' does not exist.

When contacted, an NRD customer service officer confirmed that there is no such code and requested this reporter to lodge an official report with the department.

A check with the NRD portal - which allows people to check the status of identification documents - showed that there is no record of the three MyKad.

When accessed this morning, the EC online verification system confirmed the voting details of the trio:

EC chairperson Abdul Aziz Yusof (left) has repeatedly explained that every voter registration will be checked with the NRD database through the Agency Link-up System.

Therefore, it is not known how the three voters were registered in the electoral roll despite their MyKad numbers being invalid.

"If they had been checked, the NRD would not have verified the existence of MyKad number with code '00'.
"If it was the fault of clerks, why are there so many people with the code '00' unless it was (a deliberate mistake)," Pengundi PAS Kedah says on the Facebook page.

"I hope that there will be a concrete explanation from the EC and NRD. A check with NRD shows that there is no record (of such MyKad), so where do these people come from? Born on the planet of Pluto?"

32 entries 'cleaned out'?

The Facebook page also posted screen-capture images of 32 Kedah voters who allegedly have a double identity in the electoral roll.

However, the double identity no longer exist when Malaysiakini checked with the EC online verification system this morning.

According to Abdul Aziz, the EC is 'cleaning' the electoral roll, including the removal of double registrations, on a daily basis based on NRD information.

Over the last two weeks, Malaysiakini has highlighted flaws in the electoral roll, including 'permanent resident voters' whose status in the NRD database had been 'upgraded' to 'citizen' within hours, and 'clone' voters who have two entries in the electoral roll or two different MyKad.

Under pressure from the opposition and electoral reform coalition Bersih 2.0, Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak announced on Monday that a bi-partisan parliamentary select committee on electoral reform would be formed.

PAS reveals another 'phantom voter centre'

PAS says it has more evidence of the government covertly issuing MyKad to foreigners and relocating locals, who are then inserted as BN Trojan horses in the Pakatan-held constituencies.

"A resort in Cherating, Kuantan, is being used as a processing centre as well as to distribute the MyKad.

"The centre is used for two purposes, one to hold and then coach foreigners who are then given Malaysian identity cards," PAS secretary-general Mustafa Ali (right) told a press conference at the party headquarters in Kuala Lumpur today.

"The other purpose is to process locals, who are then transferred to other voting districts."

The opposition has long been accusing the BN of such covert activities, allegedly using phantom voters who are inserted to swell the votes for the ruling coalition in areas it lacks popular support.

It has claimed that foreigners who are issued MyKad and the relocated locals will then vote for BN as coached and instructed during their induction at the 'processing centres'.

"I disclosed this yesterday at a press conference outside Kuala Lumpur, but it was not reported," lamented Mustafa.
'I can't trust EC deputy chairperson'

Asked if he has hard evidence to back his claim, he said he had what he needed to state his case.

"I shall report the matter to the Election Commission (EC), but I will hand over the evidence only to chairperson Abdul Aziz Yusof.

"I will not hand it over to the deputy chairperson, Wan Ahmad Wan Omar (left). I don't trust him. Abdul Aziz, I can still trust a little bit," sniped the PAS official.

However, Mustafa declined to disclose when he would hand over his evidence.

"Soon," was all that he was prepared to say to reporters, adding that PAS would first have to see how the EC responded to its earlier complaints.

The party had earlier revealed similar cases in Salak Tinggi and Paya Jaras in Selangor, both of which it claimed involved 'processing centres' for BN phantom voters and Trojan horses.

'MyKad issued to foreigners'

On Aug 5, the Islamic party announced at a press conference that it had raided two houses in Paya Jaras, Subang, to catch a group it believes was distributing MyKad to foreigners.

The "house owners", who escaped before police arrived after a police report was lodged by party members, were distributing MyKad to people suspected to be Indonesians and Cambodians.

During the raid, which took place in February, a collection of MyKad and scanning equipment, as well as card readers used to authenticate the identity cards, were also found.

In Salak Tinggi, the party organ Harakah Daily reported in March, National Registration Department personnel were found to be conducting briefing sessions and issuing MyKad outside of office hours.

The matter, said PAS, was suspicious and hinted at abuses in the run-up to the 13th general election.

Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim has accused Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak of deflecting the heat from the Election Commission (EC) by announcing the formation of a parliamentary select committee on electoral reforms last night.

Anwar said Pakatan Rakyat agrees in principle with the formation of the committee, but claimed that the government has more insidious reasons for the move.

“What is important is that we want action now. Why is the EC given a reprieve? Why is fraud being condoned?” he said in a scathing attack on Najib.

Last night, Najib announced the government's plan to form the committee to discuss all electoral reforms needed to find a “bipartisan agreement without any suspicion that there is manipulation by the government”.

Anwar stressed that the announcement amounts to an admission that Pakatan and Bersih 2.0 were right on the money in claiming there are serious flaws in the electoral system.

“... (Najib) has admitted (Bersih 2.0 was right), and the people have paid a price for that, getting beaten up and all that,” he said when contacted.

He said the issue now is for the government to work on making the EC truly independent so that the commission can start to fulfil its responsibilities.

“Notwithstanding the fact that even our parliamentary system also needs reform, the government must show good faith by getting the EC to act now.

“What is stopping the EC from cleaning up the rolls or reforming postal votes, registering overseas Malaysians as voters, and stopping (the registration of) foreigners as voters? Nobody in this country would feel that the EC is independent of Umno.”

Najib will 'drag' out issue

Anwar posited that the proposed select committee itself will pose a problem in implementation, as the government is not known for taking the role of Parliament seriously.

He stressed that Najib had not indicated the government's plans to hold an emergency sitting - which is necessary to form the special committee - and raised questions as to how far the premier and his administration are committed towards electoral reform.

“Look at Parliament in England - when the riots broke out they called an emergency sitting, when the News of the World exposé made the news they called an emergency sitting... in our case, Parliament is completely relegated to being a rubber stamp of the government.

“There was nothing in Najib's statement (last night) to suggest that action will be taken by the EC now. He will delay the matter in the committee.”

Selangor records best financial result in 28 years

Selangor state assembly was told that the state government's revenue increased by RM200 million during the first six months of this year.
To a question by Sekinchan state assemblyman Ng Swee Lim, Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim (left) said that the state's cash reserve stood at RM918 million at the end of 2010, RM1,100 million at June 30, 2001.
“The investment has increased by RM557 million as at June 30, 2011 compared to RM668 million at December 31, 2010. With the two sources combined it will be RM1,760 million compared to RM1,580 million for the same period in 2010.
"In six months, the state government has managed to increase the state revenue by RM200 million and this is the best financial record over the last 28 years,” he said.
Khalid stressed that the state not only achieved revenue increase but also good financial management which has been Pakatan Rakyat's battlecry before it wrested the state from Barisan Nasional in March 2008.
He said the state Micro Credit programme had distributed RM50 million to the people with sources generated from debt collection and the amount could be grouped under the Menteri Besar Consolidated Account.
Khalid thanked the state civil service for efficient management of the state revenue, including digitally documenting details of debtors.
“The state government does not give up ‘brooms’ to those who fail to perform, instead the Pakatan Rakyat state government gives gift in the form of technology to its officers," added Khalid, referring to his predecessor Mohammad Khir Toyo whose public handing out of brooms as symbol of failure of municipal council officers in collecting debts had invited condemnation from the civil servants.
Khalid said the state government had now digitalised its filing system.
"Almost 2 million records have been digitized and the cost came from the debt collection,” he said.

Voter Mismah found, denies fast-track citizenship

Mismah, who had her permanent resident status allegedly upgraded to citizenship in just four hours, was finally found by the media.

She denied any irregularity in the granting of her Malaysian citizenship.

"I follow the rules, not like what others have alleged," she was quoted by Malay daily Sinar Harian as saying.

Mismah, who hailed from Bawaen, Indonesia, was upset over the accusation that her citizenship was obtained through the “back door”.

Last week, Mismah was found to have been categorised as a permanent resident on the National Registration Department (NRD) website, and yet she was listed in the Election Commission's electoral roll.

Hours after a report on the matter was published, Mismah was subseqeuntly 'upgraded' by the NRD to Malaysian citizen.

The NRD later clarified that Mismah was granted citizenship in January this year after having been a permanent resident for 29 years, but the agency did not explain the discrepancy on its website.

Pakatan Rakyat has claimed to have detected 1,597 such cases nationwide and demanded that Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak call an emergency parliamentary sitting this month to debate the issue.

Granted PR status within months

"No, this is not true. I had been applying for Malaysian citizenship for years - not four hours, not four days and not four weeks," the soft-spoken woman told Sinar Harian when met at an undisclosed location in Kuala Lumpur.

According to the report, she was not aware of the controversy until she was informed by one of her children a few days ago.

Forty-seven-year-old Mismah said she came to Malaysia legally to work as a construction worker in 1982.

She first stayed at her grandmother's house in Keramat, Kuala Lumpur for two months before moving to a squatter area in Kayu Ara, Petaling Jaya, after getting married.

Mismah then proceeded to apply for permanent residency and was surprised to be granted the status a few months later.

"At that time, the process was simple, not like now," said Mismah in local Malay accent.

Citizenship approved 4 months after second application

But the application for citizenship took her 17 years - Mismah said she decided to make the application after 12 years residing in Malaysia but it was ignored by the Petaling Jaya NRD.

She made the second attempt in October last year to Putrajaya NRD and it was approved after four months.

Her four children and 70-year-old mother are all holders of blue MyKad, indicating that they are Malaysian citizens. Three of her children are civil servants while another has just completed his studies.

Mismah, who is currently working as a janitor in a direct sales company, had since moved out of Kayu Ara and now owns a terrace house.

Sinar Harian said it tried looking for Mismah over the past one week and finally managed to do so after being tipped off by a reader.

However, the Malay-language tabloid did not say where Mismah is now living, but according to the Election Commission, she is a registered voter in Ijok, Kuala Selangor.

'Cloned voters' vanish in 24 hrs, but questions remain

One day after the existence of 'cloned voters' - voters who have more than one entry in the electoral roll - was discovered, the Election Commission (EC) has removed the 'clones' from the roll.

However, at least one 'clone' (left) remains in the electoral roll, and there are still questions yet to be answered by both the EC and National Registration Department (NRD).

Yesterday Malaysiakini reported that at least seven voters have been found to have a 'clone' each in the electoral roll, having been registered under the same name and old identity card (IC) number, but with different MyKad numbers for the clones.

At that time, the EC online verification system showed that those names appear twice in the electoral roll, raising the question of whether they could vote twice in an election.

However, a check on the EC site this morning revealed that their 'clones' have disappeared from the same online system.

When contacted today, EC chairperson Abdul Aziz Yusof said that his commission is 'cleaning' the electoral roll on a daily basis.

“Based on daily official information from NRD through Agency Link-up System (Alis), the EC will amend or delete content on the electoral roll,” he said in a text message.

“In the case of double registration, EC will delete the not active ones subject to NRD confirmation, and the process will continue.”

Besides these two cases, a blogger also found another voter, named Isacc Yovan a/l K Pitchay, with two MyKad, numbered 630124035077 and 630124107421, in the NRD website.

The blogger claims that Isacc, who is registered in the Lembah Pantai parliamentary constituency, previously also had a double identity in the electoral roll, which was removed by the EC today after being exposed.

This reporter has been seeking explanations from the NRD on the double MyKad issue, but the department has yet to reply.

Malaysiakini also discovered that a 'cloned voter' exposed by Indera Mahkota MP Azan Ismail of the PKR last month still remains intact in the electoral roll.

The voter, named Tham Chow Hoong (old IC: 7124612) has two entries registered in the parliamentary seat of Tanjong and Bukit Gelugor respectively, but with different MyKad numbers - 630925075968 and 630925076968.

A check with NRD website showed that the first MyKad (630925075968) is valid but there is no record for the second (630925076968).

Kali ini, menurut ketua Pemuda PAS Johor Suhaizan Kaiat, SPR berjaya mencipta sejarah apabila mendaftarkan sebuah kampung bernama Kg Baru sebagai pengundi.

Menurut Suhaizan (kanan) yang juga pengerusi Pemulihan Demokrasi dan Mobilisasi Pemuda PAS, - Kg Baru mempunyai kad pengenalan bernombor 830527115422 dan dia dilahirkan pada 27 Mei 1983.

Menurut daftar pemilih SPR yang telah disahkan - Kg Baru layak mengundi di DUN Hulu Besut dan kerusi parlimen Besut.

Apabila semakan dibuat di laman web Jabatan Pendaftaran Negera (JPN) nombor kad pengenalan bagi pemilih yang bernama Kg Baru sebenarnya adalah milik Noraini Binti Abdullah.

“Persoalannya bagaimana SPR boleh melakukan kesilapan yang begitu memalukan? Bagaimana kecuaian ini boleh berlaku?

“Apakah (Timbalan Pengerusi SPR) Datuk Wan Ahmad Wan Omar masih menganggap isu ini hanyak layak dijawab oleh kerani SPR sahaja?” soal Suhaizan dalam satu kenyataan media.

Selain itu, beliau juga mendakwa Pemuda PAS telah menjumpai pemilih dari kalangan 'pengundi hantu' di mana nama mereka tidak terdapat dalam rekod JPN.

Tidak sah

Beliau memberikan contoh seseorang yang kononnya bernama Farhana Binti Abdul Rashid, no kad pengenalan 840505715012 dan dikatakan pengundi di DUN Wakaf Mempelam dan kerusi parlimen Kuala Terengganu di daftar pemilih SPR yang telah disahkan.

Namun semakan di laman web JPN menunjukkan nombor yang dimasukkan tidak sah ataupun tiada permohonan mengikut nombor yang diberikan itu.

“Persoalannya bagaimana SPR boleh mendaftarkan pengundi hantu sedangkan SPR mempunyai sistem pendaftaran pemilih sepanjang tahun (e-SPPST) yang telah dihubungkan dengan JPN melalui sistem ALIS (Agency, link-Up System)?

“Berdasarkan kepada peristiwa pada 2 Ogos lalu di mana JPN mengubah status warganegara dalam tempoh satu jam setengah maka mungkin maklumat Farhana Binti Abdul Rashid akan berubah selepas media menyiarkan maklumat pengundi hantu ini,” katanya.

Minggu lalu, SPR menyenaraikan seorang penduduk berstatus penduduk tetap (PR) yang bernama Mismah sebagai pengundi pada daftar pemilihnya.

Walau bagaimanapun semakan dalam sistem pengesahan dalam talian JPN menunjukkan Mismah adalah pemegang MyPR kad No 640704715238.

Namun kira-kira empat jam selepas laporan itu disiarkan, status Mismah dalam sistemJPN, telah 'dinaik taraf' kepada warganegara.

Ketua pengarah JPN, Datin Jariah Mohd Said kemudiannya menjelaskan perkara itu tidak benar dan rekod JPN menunjukkan dalam kes Mismah, individu itu sebenarnya telah mendapat taraf penduduk tetap pada 17 Julai 1982.

Sehubungan itu, Suhaizan berkata tempoh bantahan yang lebih lama diperlukan bagi menyemak daftar pemilih SPR bagi membuktikan ia benar-benar bebas daripada 'pengundi hantu'.

Terlalu singkat

Beliau berkata tempoh bantahan sekarang yang hanya selama lima hari termasuk dua hari bercuti adalah terlalu singkat dan tidak munasabah.

“Contohnya dalam rang suku ke-2 tahun 2011, SPR hanya membenarkan bantahan pada 29 Julai hingga 2 Ogos. Iaitu 5 hari bermula hari Jumaat hingga Selasa.

“Tempoh ini terlalu singkat dan merumitkan. Tempoh yang terlalu singkat ini seolah-olah SPR mempunyai agenda tersembunyi bagi menyukarkan pembantah untuk membuat bantahan,” katanya.

Menurut Suhaizan, Pemuda PAS juga mendesak SPR agar mengugurkan bayaran RM10 bagi setiap bantahan dan RM200 bagi setiap bantahan yang ditolak.

“Bantahan ini merupakan salah satu kaedah mengesan kesilapan manusia. Bantahan ini dibenarkan semasa SPR mempamerkan rang daftar pemilih. Apabila bayaran yang dikenakan terlalu mahal maka ia akan membebankan mereka yang mahu membuat bantahan sedangkan bantahan ini bertujuan untuk membersihkan daftar pemilih SPR.

“Ini bermaksud pembantah mahu membantu SPR membersihkan data mereka. Membersihkan daftar pemilih adalah tugas hakiki SPR. Malangnya SPR mengenakan bayaran yang tinggi untuk membantunya membersihkan daftar pemilih.

“Bayaran yang dikenakan oleh SPR kepada pembantah adalah termasuk perkara-perkara yang pelik dalam negara kita. Sepatutnya SPR memberi bayaran tanda penghargaan kepada mereka yang membuat bantahan bukannya mengenakan bayaran kepada mereka yang mahu membantu SPR,” katanya lagi.

EC registers voter named 'Kg Baru' (Kg Baru means New Village)

The Election Commission (EC) has been found to have registered a female voter named 'Kg Baru'.

At the same time, a new search has turned up more names in the electoral roll without a record in the National Registration Department (NRD) online database.

According to the EC online verification system, 'Kg Baru' (MyKad: 830527115422) is a voter registered in the state constituency of Hulu Besut and parliamentary constituency of Besut, Terengganu.

However, a check with NRD online system revealed that the MyKad number is assigned to one Noraini binti Abdullah (left).

"The question is, how can the EC make such a shameful mistake? How did it happen?” asked Johor PAS Youth chief Suhaizan Kaiat, who discovered the flaw.

“Does (EC deputy chairperson) Wan Ahmad Wan Omar still think this is an issue that should only be answered by the EC clerk?"

Responding this afternoon, EC chairperson Abdul Aziz Yusof admitted to Malaysiakini that it was a mistake and correction has been made.

"The record has been amended - (the individual's) name is Noraini binti Abdullah," he said.

Suhaizan also said he had detected a 'phantom voter' with no record in the NRD online database.

During a verification check this morning, the EC online system (right) showed that Farhana binti Abdul Rashid (MyKad: 840505715012) is a voter registered in the state constituency of Wakaf Mempelam and parliamentary constituency of Kuala Terengganu.

No result in the NRD database

However, the same identification number returned no result in the NRD online database, which stated 'no application/the number entered is not valid'.

"How can the EC register phantom voters when its registration system is linked with the NRD database through the Agency Link-Up System (Alis)?" Suhaizan asked in a statement.

This is not the first case of voters without a NRD record. This was also the case with two eligible voters, who appeared on the EC online verification system as being registered in the Hulu Langat parliamentary constituency.

However, Abdul Aziz rebutted this, arguing that the NRD database used by the EC contains details of the three voters.

He said he has no idea why the NRD website shows a different result.

Suhaizan (left) said such mistakes could have been due to human negligence, but that this showed the EC's voter verification system had failed to detect errors when the details were keyed in.

For this reason, he urged the EC to abolish the RM10 fee levied on each objection raised by the public, as well as the RM200 penalty for every objection that is rejected.

"One way to detect human negligence is through objections... But when the fee is too high, it burdens those who want to raise objections, when the purpose of objections is to clean up the electoral rolls," said Suhaizan.

"The objection fee is one of many weird matters in Malaysia. In fact, the EC should pay those who make objections as a token of appreciation, rather than charge them," he added.

Objection period 'too short'

Suhaizan also complained that the five-day objection period (July 29 - Aug 2), including a weekend, for the second quarter supplementary electoral roll draft was too short and unreasonable.

"The charges and short period make it seem that the EC has a hidden agenda to make it difficult for people to raise objections."

Under the election law, the EC updates the electoral rolls every three months with a quarterly supplementary electoral roll draft.

The names of all newly-registered voters, voters who have changed their residing addresses and voters who have been removed from the electoral roll, are compiled in the supplementary electoral roll draft.

The roll is then displayed, usually for one week, for public scrutiny, before it is gazetted and used in the next election.

During the display period, members of the public can raise objections to the names listed in the supplementary electoral roll, but must pay the related fees.

Bishop Paul tells Jais - prove it or apologise

Catholic Bishop Dr Paul Tan Chee Ing today called on Jais to “quickly furnish proof of their claim that there has been proselytisation of Muslims by Christians as they have claimed.”

“I implore them not to procrastinate on this matter like the authorities are doing with respect to an alleged Christian plot in Penang recently to dethrone Islam,” said the titular head of the diocese of Melaka-Johor, who is concurrently president of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Malaysia.

“Please quickly furnish proof of this claim so that Christians can take the appropriate corrective action and tender the requisite apologies, or do the obverse which is demand that an apology be issued for false accusation,” said Bishop Paul Tan (left) said in remarks made to Malaysiakini.

“This campaign of innuendo and insinuation against Christians' subscription to a cardinal tenet of our constitutional structure, which is the respect for Islam as the federation's official religion has gone on long enough,” he asserted.

“It's high time these claims be proven to be substantive in which case Christians can take the necessary corrective and contrite action, or demand that Christian bashing be condemned and stopped,” said the Jesuit-trained prelate.

He noted with “great distress that that person who has preferred these accusations is from PAS - a party that these days is inclined to unify the Malaysian people rather than divide along them along sectarian lines.”

“Although a former president of this party (Mohd Asri Muda) was responsible in the early 1970s for the base canard that Christians were a greater threat to Malaysia than the communists, the party has since markedly altered its perspective and stand on national questions,” said the bishop.

“Like many Malaysians, I wholeheartedly welcome this liberating development, which is why I am greatly distressed that the latest round of accusations against Christians emanates from their quarter.”

Is it true or false?

Bishop Paul Tan further noted that PAS is a party that upholds morality in public and private conduct.

“No Christian worth his or her salt would ever be against this principle in life. Too often in politics, we are faced with people who make a pretense of public virtue while being squalid in private morals,” he continued.

“That this is not the case with PAS is something that their spiritual leader has sought by word and deed to transmit to the Malaysian people. We are greatly edified by his endeavour.

“This is why, ironically, the fact that the accusation stems from their quarter raises hope of its decisive and final adjudication: Is it true or is it false?” he said referring to Selangor exco Hasan Ali (left), who yesterday backed the Jais raid on the Damansara Utama Methodist Church.

“This uncertainty has been going on for too long now it has furnished grounds for agent provocateurs to foist their poisons on the body politic.

“This must stop either by Christians desisting from unconstitutional conduct or by their accusers being made to account for the falsity of their claims. There are no two ways about this.

“However, I must emphasise it is the right of a person to believe in whatever he or she chooses to. Religion can be proposed but never imposed. That is respect for the sanctity of individual conscience.”

Multi-racial dinner at church disrupted by Jais

Officers from the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) last night trespassed into a church compound in Petaling Jaya and disrupted a multiracial thanksgiving dinner.

According to Damansara Utama Methodist Church (DUMC) senior pastor Daniel Ho, a group of between 20 to 30 Jais and police officers, uniformed and plainclothes, entered the premises without a warrant.

"They entered the hall where the dinner was taking place, and started taking videos and photographs," said Ho in a statement today.

"When asked by the organisers why they were there, a Jais (official) replied that they received a complaint, but was unable to produce a copy (of the complaint) when asked," he added.

Ho claimed that Jais officers took down details of the Muslim guests before leaving the premises with the police.

According to him, the dinner was held by non-profit organisation Harapan Komuniti at the Dream Centre, an activity complex within the DUMC compound.

The occasion was to commemorate the NGO's efforts on numerous community projects, including with women and children, and victims of HIV/AIDS and natural disasters.

"Harapan Komuniti is a community-based NGO that brings love, hope and peace to the poor, needy and marginalised, regardless of race, language, religion or status.

"The dinner was a multiracial celebratory gathering of volunteers, leaders, supporters and members of the community who have benefited from the NGO's work," Ho explained.

DUMC and Community Excel Services, which had rented Dream Center, said they were highly disappointed with the actions of Jais and police officers who had entered and searched a private property without a warrant.

"They have subjected all guests at the Thanksgiving Dinner to undue harassment," said Ho, stressing the dinner's aim of appreciating and commemorating Harapan Komuniti's efforts to help Malaysians of all walks of life."

Ho called on all Malaysians not to condone this breach of freedom of assembly and association as provided by Article 10 of the federal constitution, "but to live in mutual trust and love, to promote peace, harmony and unity in the true spirit of 1Malaysia".

According to DUMC members who posted about the incident on micro-blogging website Twitter, Jais officers ransacked the garbage bins of the church.

Last Friday, Dream Centre hosted an electoral reform forum organised by the Association for the Promotion of Human Rights (Proham), featuring Bersih 2.0 chief Ambiga Sreenevasan and Election Commission deputy chairperson Wan Ahmad Wan Omar.

Opposition parliamentarians have claimed that the July 16 edition of The Economist has been defaced by the Home Ministry in an apparent attempt to censor a report on the Bersih 2.0 rally for electoral reform.

“The Economist July16 issue has been censored/black inked on Bersih story by Home Ministry,” reads a tweet by Ipoh Barat MP M Kulasegaran.

In photos distributed via micro-blog site Twitter, the report headlines 'Political affray in Malaysia: Taken to the cleaners' shows lines blacked out by what seems to be a permanent marker pen.

Malaysiakini could not immediately verify the claim, but a comparison with the online version reveals that the lines struck out refer to allegations of police and government misconduct:

- 'and one man died of a heart attack', in the first paragraph.

- 'The march itself was then banned, although the authorities offered Bersih a stadium to meet in - and then withdrew the offer', in the second paragraph

- 'The heavy-handed police tactics have provoked a lot of anger; the government has conceded an official investigation into claims of police brutality. In one instance (caught on film), police seemed to fire tear gas and water cannon into a hospital where protesters were sheltering from a baton charge', in the fourth paragraph.

When contacted, Kulasegaran criticised the action as “uncalled for”.

“In this day and age only a police run state would do this. They are trying to hide writing which could be true, because (they are afraid) it will be read by the public and they will believe it. The government is still (suffering from) denial syndrome.”

However, the DAP leader dismissed the attempt as ineffectual as the full article is “available online anyway”.

PKR vice-president Tian Chua also tweeted on the matter and posted photos of the censored pages: “I'm sure @TheEconomist readers are intelligent enough to know how to get the full article, but the censorship reflects the stupidity & insecurity of an autocratic regime.”

He observed that the portrayal of the “Jews as bogeyman (by Umno owned-daily) Utusan (Malaysia) & @TheEconomist censorship signify an insecure regime”.

Malaysiakini was unable to get through to the relevant Home Ministry officer for comment, despite several attempts today.

Pemerhati: If a US university in collaboration with the Ku Klux Klan (which, like Ibrahim Ali's Perkasa, believes in the racial superiority) starts giving out cash awards to students who have proven they have "clear and consistent" principles in upholding their white race, what sort of an opinion would a normal person have about that particular university and its students?

Would any foreign country and the majority of its own people have any respect for that university or its students?

UiTM (Universiti Teknologi Mara) may not have been that well-known in the past, but this collaboration with Perkasa's Ibrahim Ali to promote a racist agenda is likely to make it well-known as the world's premier racist university.

Lim Chong Leong: This is clearly racist and incites racism amongst the younger generation. If Ibrahim Ali is not arrested for inciting racial hatred but a government-sponsored university supporting such racist programme instead, then clearly the ministers of higher education, education, home ministry and the PM himself are guilty of conspiring to incite racial tension.

Lin Wenquan: UiTM is certainly proud to have this dinosaur amongst its alumni who claims to be a mass communications graduate and a student of the 'School of Freedom' in Germany, but who cannot even think and articulate logically.

Instead of encouraging its students to pursue studies that will stand them in good stead in facing the challenges and demands of globalisation, we have UiTM promoting the cult and mischief of a miscreant and a literal 'katak dibawah tempurung'.

Anak Bangsa Malaysia: Somehow I doubt an 'Ibrahim Ali Award' will carry much value anywhere outside of Perkasa and Umno's in-bred communities.

Anonymous: There's nothing wrong with the award. What racism? Put aside what he had said or done, and focus on the award alone. It is merely to encourage UiTM students to strive better and to reinforce a sense of belonging among the Malays, that's all, and it has got nothing to do with other races.

If it is true that the objective of the award is to upgrade the honour and reputation of the Malay race, let them be. Even among other races, there are awards for those who have done or are doing any initiatives to improve their race.

If, it is proven that this award breeds racism, then let us all condemn it. Otherwise, even if you are not interested to support it, just stay out of it.

Baiyuensheng: There is nothing wrong with the award to upkeep Malay culture and reputation, but what does Perkasa stands for?

Just look at their actions. Supporting corruption, cronyism, Malay supremacy, extremism, racism, etc. Perkasa has damaged the very core of Malay culture.

David Dass: Why does the Malay race need a champion of this sort? Malaysia is a diverse country made up of 13 states and diverse races. The Malays are the majority with about 60 percent of the population.

The position of the Malay rulers, Islam, the national language and special rights are protected by the constitution. No change can be made without Malay approval. The minority non-Malays can never threaten the majority Malays. The civil service, the police and the armed forces are also at least 80 percent Malay. In fact the non-alays are dependent on the Malays.

The Malays do not need champions like Ibrahim Ali. The real threat to all Malaysians is the economy. We are 50 percent dependent on oil and gas revenues. That is a diminishing asset. We need to increase our revenue from other sources. There is an exodus of talent. There is low foreign investment.

Those are the real threats to all Malaysians. We should not see each other as threats. We should come together as Malaysians. And build a united prosperous country.

Nik V: Hopefully a good student will benefit from this. Remember a good thing can also come out of bad thing in the right hands.

UiTM, on the other hand, has shown its true face. When the right time comes, a truly charismatic and patriotic class of leadership will remove and change the current board on UiTM with a world-class set of educators, if the current lot don't change.

Anonymous: UiTM don't go so low by offering such a scholarship. It would be disgraceful to promote Ibrahim Ali's name as he is a person without respect.

Look at his comments on women - they can be your sisters, mother or grandmother. It is sad to say he has no brains and he barks without thinking and feelings.

Board members of UiTM, is this the type of person you want to promote? Please don't degrade your institution's name for God sake. Think twice, or even thrice, about this award.

Mangodurian: Talk about condoning and encouraging racism. Isn't it the government's and law enforcement's duty to stop this? Isn't there anything in our laws that consider this as a crime?

Any lawyers here can advise? I know that a non-BN government will surely stop this or enact laws to make this clearly illegal.

Amidst mounting eyewitness accounts alleging police brutality at Saturday's Bersih 2.0 rally, the Bar Council's monitoring team found an exemplary model of police action that demonstrated 'restraint, professionalism and politeness' in crowd control.

"There was no use of tear gas or water cannon, nor were there any arbitrary arrest after or during the dispersal of the crowd. That is how crowd control should have been done throughout Kuala Lumpur," Bar Council president Lim Chee Wee told a press conference yesterday.

He was referring to the situation at Changkat Stadium, off Jalan Hang Jebat, where thousands of protestors had assembled after they were dispersed by tear gas and water cannon in the area around the Puduruya bus terminal.

According to the observation report released yesterday on the Bar Council website, the crowd led by PKR vice-president Chua Jui Meng reached the road leading to Stadium Merdeka - the rally destination - at 2.20pm but was stopped by police barricades (right).

"The police officer denied them access to Stadium Merdeka. Both parties were polite to each other. The police officer explained that they were under orders not to let anyone in,” reads the report.

"Chua (holding mic) used a megaphone to make a speech. He thanked the officer for their civil manner, and mentioned the (Agong) had allowed them to use the stadium, and they came in peace. The crowd cheered in support of him."

The crowd then dispersed and headed towards the Central Market where they were assaulted by rounds of tear gas.

"During the entire time the crowd gathered before the barricades, the police on duty were polite, and the crowd was cooperative. There was no attempt to force their way in. The police officers were polite to us (observers) as well. There was no shouting, no harsh words uttered," the report states.

Condemning the "wholly unnecessary" launching of tear gas and water cannon against the rally participants at all other locations, Lim described the Jalan Hang Jebat case as an "exemplary model" of crowd control.

"What we can hope for is the exemplary pocket, one exemplary location where the police acted professionally will become the model for the rest of the other officers."

Compliance with Suhakam model

He also said the police there had adopted the collaborative model recommended by the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia years ago.

"Police engage the crowd, seek out ... the one or two leaders or the marshalls among the crowd, to find out what is their intention."

Then both sides negotiate. The police should give the crowd reasonable time to make speeches, followed by at least three warnings demanding them to disperse before resorting to force, he said.

However Lim could only identify the police officer in-charge as a Suhaimi.

"I don't have his rank. I now regret not recording his rank and number. He was very professional."

Lim also commended the KL Criminal Investigation Department chief Ku Chin Wah (right) for allowing the lawyers to provide legal access to those detained at police training centre and Jinjang police station a few hours after the arrests.

These are people who are highly respected in every sense of the word. On the other hand, it does clearly show how fearful Najib and his colleagues are of the influence and impact these leaders have to bring about the momentum for change.

I think this is definitely going against human rights. The police are being too uptight over the Bersih rally.

Cops: Restriction order against 91 individuals

The police have placed a restriction order on 91 individuals, including organisers of the Bersih 2.0, Perkasa and Umno Youth's Patriot rallies.

The order is to stop any of the 91 from being present at several spots in Kuala Lumpur on July 9.

"This means that anyone (on the list) caught present at these areas will be arrested on sight," said the city deputy police chief Amar Singh.

Top on the list are the Bersih 2.0 steering committee members, including Ambiga Sreenevasan, Wong Chin Huat and Maria Chin Abdullah.

Also on the list are Pakatan Rakyat leaders, such as opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim, PAS spiritual adviser Nik Aziz Nik Mat, his party's deputy-president Mohamad Sabu, DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang and social activist Hishamuddin Rais.

Fourteen from Perkasa, including its president Ibrahim Ali and other top leaders such as Ab Rahman Ab Bakar and Syed Hassan Syed Ali.

Umno Youth leaders also included in the list are Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin Abu Bakar, secretary Megat Firdouz Megat Junid and information chief Reezal Merican Naina Merican and eight others.

“This order is to avoid from any activity that can disrupt public order or bring danger to human lives and security.

“With this, they are barred and given warning not to be present or take any part in any assembly in those places on July 9 from 8am to 6pm,” said Amar during a press conference in the Kuala Lumpur police headquarters this evening.

A breach of the order would contravene Section 188 of the Penal Code for disobedience to an order duly promulgated by a public servant, punishable by up to six months' jail or up to RM2,000 fine or both.

The police chief added that the order was approved yesterday and that it has been sent out to the 91 individuals.

Mix-up in list

When asked how the police decided on the 91 individuals, Amar said that it was based on police investigation over the past few weeks.
However, it was evident that although 66 people were listed as Bersih 2.0 supporters, some of them were clearly either Umno members or anti-Bersih.

Among those on the Bersih 2.0 list are former deputy minister Khalid Yunus, Kulim-Bandar Baharu MP Zulkifli Noordin, Gagasan Melayu Perak president Mohd Hilmi Ismail and national scout chief commissioner Kamaruddin Kachar.

Even Perkasa leaders were listed under Bersih 2.0 supporters such as Negeri Sembilan, Kelantan and Terengganu commissioners Mohd Noor Nordin Abdullah, Sibri Ismail and Mohd Lukman Muda respectively.

The list has also includes at least one mistake. Perkasa vice-president Zubir Harun was listed twice - in the Perkasa and Bersih 2.0 list.

Road closures from Saturday morning

According to the order signed by a Kuala Lumpur Magistrate, the 91 are barred from being along Jalan Syed Putra, Jalan Istana, Jalan Bukit Petaling, Jalan Bellamy and the area surrounding Istana Negara.

They are also barred from Jalan Sultan Hishamuddin, Jalan Lembah Perdana, Jalan Cenderasari and the area around Masjid Negara.

The police also listed Dataran Merdeka, Central Market, Masjid Jamek, Dataran DBKL, Sogo shopping mall, Maju Junction, Kampung Baru mosque, Jalan Kinabalu, Jalan Kuching, Jalan Sultan Ismail, Jalan Haji Taib, Jalan Raja Muda Musa, Jalan Raja Bot, Jalan Dang Wangi, Jalan Munshi Abdullah, Jalan Gereja, Jalan Raja Chulan, Jalan Tun Perak, Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Loke, Jalan Sultan Mahmud as restricted areas to the 91.

Although there were already numerous roadblocks around the country since yesterday, Amar said that the city police will be closing roads and diverting traffic from Friday midnight.

He also said that the police have not received any police permit applications to assemble at press time.

The Bersih 2.0 movement is still illegal and subject to legal action, said Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein.

He said that although the Agong had granted an audience to Bersih 2.0's leaders yesterday, the government's position has not changed.

"They are banned. They are still banned. Nobody can put themselves over the law... just because Tuanku met them doesn't mean they are no longer illegal," he told a press conference in Putrajaya today.

Hishammuddin, exercising his powers as home minister, had declared Bersih 2.0 illegal on July 1.

He dodged a barrage of questions related to Bersih 2.0's legality and whether or not it has a guarantee of being granted access to a stadium for its rally - he repeatedly said the rally organisers must deal with the police.

However, Hishammuddin shot down Bersih 2.0 chief S Ambiga's claim that the coalition is not required to apply for a permit, stressing that Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Ismail Omar has clearly set this as a pre-condition.

'The IGP was very clear (in his statement yesterday). We are all governed by the laws of the land, (and) the IGP's statement yesterday also stated Section 27 (of the Police Act), which states you have to apply for a permit.”

Asked several times whether or not the government can guarantee that the planned indoor rally on Saturday will be allowed to take place, Hishammuddin was again evasive, only saying this depends on the organisers' application for a permit.

“Let them apply. Then the process is for the police to consider. The quicker they apply, the quicker they can process as far as the police are concerned ... the permission to have (the) gathering will depends on their application,” he said.

Hishammuddin said the rally will get the green light if the organisers apply for a permit and meet all the conditions set, although he was sparse on the details.

“We will have to wait for their application first. That (conditions) will be discussed when they do make the application, between them and the police.”

Crackdown will continue

Hishammuddin said that, since Bersih 2.0 is illegal, there is no reason for the authorities to end the crackdown on supporters, as they are still considered to be linked with an illegal organisation.

“... as long as they are still illegal, actions related to something illegal are still under the purview of the nation's laws. We are consistent in our stand on the law.

“But based on the circumstances now, they (Bersih 2.0) want to assemble at a stadium so there is room for discussion. The engagement and ability for them to voice their concerns is not just about wearing T-shirts, it's bigger than that.

“The idea is talking about fair and free [sic] general elections, and that's what the government wants anyway. So if you want to have it at a stadium, why should a T-shirt or a name be an issue here? Let's not be distracted from the core matter we are supposed to be fighting for, which is fair and free [sic] elections.”

Stadium offer a 'positive development'

Hishammuddin also brushed aside criticism from international groups that condemned the government's crackdown on Bersih 2.0 and its supporters, countering that the stadium offer is a “positive development”.

He claimed that the only reason the police resorted to the crackdown was because “there was no other avenue” to tackle Bersih 2.0's initial plan to hold a mass street rally.

“But now we have an alternative, isn't that a positive movement? I would like to monitor and see what is their (international NGOs) reaction (to the stadium offer).

“... if they still see it as a crackdown when we (have) given space to gather in a stadium, then they are prejudiced, biased and not being fair to the government.”

Hishammuddin added that local and international NGOs have no right to demand for the release of Bersih 2.0 supporters who have been detained.

“It's not for them to say, because it is for the law to decide when a man is to be released or not.”

Terror at Jalan Tasik Titiwangsa

I make this statement so that all are aware at the state of policing and safety in Kuala Lumpur… there is no one to help you except faith in God, calmness and thinking carefully and rationally.

Yesterday (Saturday) the 25^th June 2011, my sister, and my cousins went out for dinner. Unfortunately, after dinner, my cousin’s car broke down in Subang in front of my sister’s house. As the car could only be attended to the following day, my, my nephew decided to give my cousins a ride home to Taman Tasik Titiwangsa.

By the time we left Subang Jaya it was about 11.45pm. My sister and I decided to accompany my nephew to leave my cousins at home. We watched them go into their home, waved goodbye and made our way back home via Jalan Titiwangsa. It was about 12.15am (26 June 2011) and the beginning of our traumatic experience.

My nephew in the driver’s seat, I next to him in the passenger seat and my sister seated at the back seat directly behind the driver.

We reached the first traffic light – the crossroad between Jalan Kuantan and Jalan Tasik Titiwangsa - the cars in front drove off but we stopped as the lights turned red. We were talking and we noticed that there were many motorcyclists’ waiting on either side (on Jalan Kuantan). The lights changed green and we proceeded to drive slowly ahead as the motorcyclists also went in the same direction; ours was the only car at that stretch.

The motorcyclists’ were circling our car, my sister instinctively pressed the central locking as she was seated directly behind the driver. They (the motorcyclists) were crisscrossing and then suddenly two motorcyclists’ came on either side of our car – at drivers and my side – tapped on the window (we were still moving slowly) and told us to stop. We heard them say they were police and they ordered us to stop immediately.

I just shook my head and said “NO”, my nephew immediately knew they were not police, he too said “NO” and we continued to drive very slowly taking care not to knock them. Both the men were Malay, in plainclothes, the one at driver’s window was clean shaven whereas the one on my side had a faint (scanty) mustache.

Each of them then flashed some card – it looked like a driving license or identity card of some sort – at us and again asked us to stop in a threatening manner gesturing and banging the window, continuously claiming they were the police.

All their talking was in Malay – we both continued to say “NO”, shaking our heads and drove on ahead slowly.

By this time the motorcyclist at the driver’s side rode off and parked his motorcycle across the road behind some cars which were waiting at the traffic lights near the petrol station (I cannot be sure but I think there were about 2 cards at the traffic lights), thereby blocking our path towards the traffic light.

Mr. Scanty mustache the came to my side and told us to stop, I shook my head and kept on saying “No”, both my nephew and I continuously kept on saying this while shaking our heads. He then gestured to me, lifted his tea-shirt and I saw a pistol tucked in the waistband of his trousers. My sister froze at the sight of the gun, we calmed her and continued saying “No”.

We could not turn as we had reached the part where the road divider was in place, my nephew then started to reverse, we decided to try and go back to my cousin’s place.

By this time Mr. Scanty mustache moved to the driver’s side and another motorcyclist appeared alongside as if “enquiring” what the problem was.

Mr. Mustache told the other guy that he was the police and that we refused to stop. Just then I took out the phone and called my cousin telling her we were being harassed by armed men and that I was going to sms her the motorcycle number.

While I was on the phone my nephew lowered the window about an inch and told Mr Mustache and his friend that they were not police and that he was going straight to the police station and they could follow us there if they chose to do so – it must have been then that they saw me talking on the phone and heard me saying I was going to message the vehicle number.

Before I could even look and take the number they gestured to one another and ALL THREE fled in the direction of Jalan Kuantan back to the lake. We also noticed that there was another car coming up behind us.

Unfortunately we were unable to take down any of the motorbike numbers.

We did not go to the police either and drove straight home after calling my cousin again (at about 12.40 am, 26 Jun 2011) to tell her that the motorcyclists’ had vanished. We decided not to lodge a police report simply because of the following:
1. We were in a residential area with these people who claimed to be police – with the recent happenings - they may have very well been the police or the infamous RELA
2. We have no confidence in the police as we were unsure whether the motorcyclists had ‘connections’ with the police,
3. The police is reputed to racially profile motorists/pedestrians etc and
4. My sister who just turned 60 is just recovering from lung infection and has high blood pressure, she, in fact all of us, were traumatized by the happenings.

I am writing this today, safe and sound because of the following
- our Christian faith that God will protect (this is irrelevant - Christians never had troubles in life??)
- we remained calm and cool
- we refused to pull over and continued to move despite being threatened,
- my call on the hand-phone to my cousin and
- the car which later came behind us.
-
I urge ALL Malaysians, especially those who live in the urban areas of Selangor such as Petaling Jaya, Subang Jaya and in our so called ‘safe’ capital Kuala Lumpur especially at Taman Titiwangsa and the surrounding areas to be extra vigilant, be calm, do not stop, when confronted by these intimidating cowards who only act in ‘herds’.

Members of the public who lodge reports at 92 police stations in Selangor can rate the quality of service they receive in a pilot project starting on Monday.

This is an initiative introduced under Public Service Delivery to enhance government efficiency in business and public-related services, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Idris Jala said today.

It is one of the six Strategic Reform Initiatives announced by the government today.

Under this real-time performance and feedback rating system, Idris said, the government would be able to gauge the quality and efficiency of service provided by the frontliners.

The people can give their feedback on a scale of one to four via an electronic device provided at the police station or by SMS by sending RATE (space) Balaicode (space) Officer Number (space) 1-4 (space) RATING to 15888, he told reporters after the Economic Transformation Programme update.

Idris said the project would be assessed after two to three months while performance of the officers involved would be evaluated weekly.

He said the data received would be used to improve the service quality of officers, especially those who did not receive a good rating.

"It will take two or three months for us to see how it goes, whether there is enough data collected or whether the pilot project should be extended. So public participation is needed," Idris said.

He said the rating system would be extended to other service providers, including the Immigration Department and those dealing with public hospitals and transport.

Agong suggests restraint on Bersih issue

Istana Negara tonight issued a special statement by Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin on the planned rally by Bersih.

Below is the translated full text of the King's statement.

"I am following closely the developments of the proposed gathering and procession by Bersih with the aim of handing over a memorandum to me as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, and how the government, particularly the agencies and departments concerned, is handling the issue.

"However, I believe that the nation's leadership under Najib Abdul Razak is capable of handling this problem in the best possible way.
"I urge that amid the political fervour of a section of the people to bolster democracy in our country, it must also be ensured that this demand on democracy does not bring destruction to the country.
"Generally, we cannot be following too much the practices in other countries, as harmony and stability are vital foundations for a country and which all quarters must protect.

"I also urge the government to carry out everything that is entrusted to it by the people in a just and wise manner, and it is important that I, as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, do not want to see this country with a plural society in a situation where there is animosity among them or a section of the people being enemies with the government, on whatever grounds.

"When any problem arises, we as a civilised society must resolve it through consultations and not follow our emotions, as the Malay saying goes, 'Yang Dikejar Tak Dapat Yang Dikendong Berciciran'” (Not getting what we chase after and spilling what we carry).

"The fact is, street demonstrations bring more bad than good although the original intention is good. Instead, we should focus on our main objective to develop this country, and not create problems that will cause the country to lag behind.

"Remember that there is no land where the rain does not fall, there is no ocean that is not turbulent. That is how important moderation and compromise is, which has been long been in practice by our nation's administration."

Immigration forced S'pore duo to do 'nude squats'

Two Singaporean women were reportedly forced to do squats in the nude by Immigration Department personnel following their arrest for “illegal entry” into Malaysia.

Such a practice was declared as “inhumane and undignified” and be immediately discontinued by the Royal Commission to Inquire into the Standard Operating Procedure, Rules and Regulations in Relation to the Conduct of Body Search in Respect of an Arrest and Detention report in 2006.

According to Singapore's Chinese daily Lianhe Zaobao, the incident happened during the wee hours of June 9 when the two women drove across the Causeway from the island republic.

The duo were headed to Johor Bahru for supper, but they were apparently negligent and walked passed the immigration counter without having their passports stamped.

For this, they were reportedly detained on the charge of being illegal immigrants and held at a lock-up facility in Pontian, Johor.

Under the pseudonym of Lin Li Li, the woman told the newspaper that she and her friend Zhan Ting Ting, another psuedonym, were ordered to take off their clothes and do 10 squats.

They were reportedly only given clothes meant for detainees after performing the act. They also complained about being handcuffed and that the lock-up conditions were atrocious.

"The clothes were dirty and smelly. The cell was only as big as two third of a basketball court, but there are 50 people inside. There were also a lot of mosquitos and cockroaches.

"We were handcuffed, we were treated as detainee even though we were proved not guilty. This is an insult,” Lin was reported as saying.

Home Ministry yet to receive report

After the 24-hour detention, they were released with a warning letter from the immigration officer.

Upset with their treatment, the duo said they will never enter Malaysia again even if they were invited to do so.

According to a Sin Chew Daily website, Home Ministry secretary-general Mahmud Adam has declined to comment on the matter because he had yet to receive any report on the matter.

This is the second major allegation of abuse of power by the Malaysian authorities since November 2005, when a video of a woman forced to perform nude squats by the police began circulating on the Internet.

According to the police, the nude squats was meant to look for illicit drugs.

The incident led to the formation of an independent commission led by former chief justice Mohamed Dzaiddin Abdullah, which recommended that the practice be discontinued.

KLANG, SELANGOR: A rumour said an unidentified flying object (UFO) was spotted in Sri Andalas for three nights continuously.
As a result, some residents waited for the UFO Tuesday (16 March) and claimed that they saw an unidentified object that night.
According to the witnesses, they saw an UFO with blue lights circling around the sky for quite a long time.
The Li family from Taman Wira was the first who spotted the UFO. Subsequently, others claimed to have spotted the flying object on the following three nights.
When the news was spread, about 20 residents, equipped with telescopes and cameras, waited for it on Tuesday night.
An unidentified object was spotted in the sky around 8pm. However, it was too far away. Although the residents were able to see it, they failed to captured its image with their cameras.
Witness Li Kangwei, 26, told Sin Chew Daily that through a telescope, the UFO was having the same shape as those shown on TV. It was in oval-plate shape with vivid blue lights. When it descended or slowed down, it changed to red lights.
He said that his sister was the first who spotted the UFO. After that, the flying object appeared irregularly on the following three nights. It floated in the sky for about half an hour.
"On those three nights, there were two flying objects. When they were floating in the sky, they floated crisscrossingly."
Li also said that the flying object flew in a high speed which was much faster than ordinary aeroplanes. Therefore, he and his family believed that it was not an aeroplanes.
"An aeroplane would not 'float' in the sky like that. Besides, it was floating higher than aeroplanes. It could not be a remote control aircraft either," he said.
It was the Li family's first time seeing an UFO. But for the past one year, residents from Taman Sentosa, which was not far away from Sri Andalas, also claimed to have spotted an UFO which was also in oval-plate shape, but the UFO appeared in the evening.

Hindu Sangam withdraws support for NIAT?

Organisation conspiciously silent after its president Mohan Shan orders his two reps to stay away from NIAT which is at the forefront of the Interlok issue.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Hindu Sangam, allegedly under pressure from the MIC and the PM’s Office, has withdrawn its support for National Interlok Action Team (NIAT) which is spearheading the Interlok issue.

The organisation has been conspiciously silent on the matter after the movement’s president Mohan Shan ordered his representatives to stay away from NIAT, said sources.

NIAT was born when the first Interlok meeting was held at the Hindu Sangam headquarters where representatives of more than 140 Indian NGOs assembled and formed the movement.
The Hindu Sangam appointed Dr Balatharmalingam, its deputy president and Arun Doraisamy, former youth chief as it is representatives in NIAT.

Although the two are still in NIAT, it is learnt that Mohan caved in to pressure from the MIC leadership and the prime minister’s office and withdrew his support for NIAT.

According to the source, this was done under threat of losing its annual allocation from federal government.
“There are also rumours Mohan was promised a datukship prior to the Interlok issue and it is now under threat of being withheld after the Sangam’s involvement in NIAT,” he said.
“Mohan does not intend to give up on the possibility of getting the title, neither does he want to lose the federal allocation to the

Hindu Sangam over the Interlok issue,” he added.

“So, as the first step he suspended Arun for not adhereing to his instruction to stay away from the NIAT and Balatharmalingam is under pressure to do the same ,” said the source.

Mohan denies allegations

The source said the Hindu Sangam is being servile to its political masters and is nothing but another tool for Umno to help brainwash the Indian community.

He said the Johor Hindu Sangam played an active role in wooing the community to vote for BN in Tenang by-election earlier this year.

“This is not the duty of the Hindu Sangam,” he said.
Contacted later, Mohan Shan denied all the allegations. He said youth chief Arun was suspended for working against the Sangam and not because of his involvement in NIAT.

“Hindu Sangam has been clear on its stand over Interlok.We still stand by our demand that the government withdraw the books from the school syllabus,” he added.

He also said that Hindu Sangam still engaged with NIAT as its deputy president still a NIAT committee member.

Interlok caused a controversy when detractors claimed that the novel contained derogatory words to describe Malaysian Indians.

S'wak CM's office 'issued cheques to buy votes'

Malaysian Election Observers Network coordinator Ong Boon Keong has revealed more damning evidence of alleged vote-buying in the recent Sarawak elections, following an equally controversial video exposé of the alleged offence on May 26.

Ong is giving the authorities two weeks to act, failing which he will initiate a nationwide campaign to mobilise voters in rejecting all candidates who have a similar 'strategy' in mind for the coming general election.

He revealed photocopies of vouchers dated March 25 and 27 purportedly from the Chief Minister' s Office, showing that a payment of RM15,000 had been made to members of a longhouse and RM1,000 to another recipient.

Ong, who has been involved in registering voters in the interiors of Sarawak since 2009, said he was reliably informed by local observers that the payments were made after the dissolution of the state assembly on March 25.

He claimed that cheques for various amounts that tallied with the number of voters in each longhouse had been distributed at the Selangau BN office to about 200 tuai rumah (longhouse chiefs).

"The purpose is for the longhouse chiefs to distribute RM500 per door. The cheque was to be cashed, the chiefs were told, after the BN candidate won," he told reporters in Penang last night.

"On the eve of polling, there was a round of cash payments to individual voters, with each receiving RM50 or RM100. For example, in the Rumah Unban longhouse, the payment shown in the video was RM50 per voter."

Ong said the payments are questionable as they were “indisputably” meant to pressure voters to vote for a particular candidate.

His team also came across elements of deceit because multiple cheques had bounced, for example, due to spelling mistakes in the recipients' names.

Ong stressed that Tamin BN assemblyperson Joseph Mauh Ikeh's claim that the money was to subsidise transport expenses cannot stand against the more credible account of vote-buying by local observers.

"Mauh also called it a 'consolation' (sagu hati) payment to the voters. He should be told that such payments blatantly violate the Election Offences Act 1954, as they amount to bribery whether or not the voters eventually voted for him.

"Mauh's argument that 3,000 voters voted for his opponent does not mean that he did not try to induce voters to vote for him.”

'Gross criminality'

Mauh, the Parti Rakyat Sarawak vice-president, had shot down the allegations, clarifying that the payments were a “transport allowance” for voters to get to polling stations, or an allowance for those involved in campaign work like putting up posters.

Ong had earlier released a video recording showing cash purportedly being distributed to voters in the Tamin state constituency, which was retained by the BN.

He said he finds the matter troubling as the money was from the allocation for the development budget administered by the Chief Minister's Office.

"As polls were called following the dissolution of the state assembly, any allocation from the state coffers to advance a candidate's campaign amounts to criminal theft!" he exclaimed.

Building on Mauh's (left) remark that payments may have been issued to voters in all 71 constituencies, Ong said the total amount of public funds used for the Sarawak BN campaign would amount to an astounding RM208 million for 979,796 voters.

The money needed to buy votes for Tamin alone, he noted, would amount to about RM2.6 million for 12, 224 voters.

"This amounts to gross criminality against the state and inordinate unfairness to the opposition (which has) no similar access to public funds," said Ong.

"More seriously, election results significantly distorted by vote-buying are unrepresentative of the real choice of the people and are therefore invalid.”

Last week, Ong was deported while on a visit to Sarawak in connection with the state election. He was not given a reason.

Islamic leaders question non-Muslim rights

KUALA LUMPUR, May 22 – Several Islamic leaders have questioned the loyalty of non-Muslims in the country, declaring today the community’s rights must be re-evaluated if Malaysia is to call itself an Islamic state.
Former president of Islamic Da’wah Foundation Malaysia (Yadim), Datuk Nakhaie Ahmad, said treatment of non-Muslims must be based on the social contract agreed and pointed out that the government has been too gracious to the community.
“In attempts to get vote and support of non-Muslims, we have been very gracious in giving them their civil rights. Civil rights given to them includes the rights to vote, participation in politics, hold office, involvement in the military and so forth but we cannot just willingly give them everything.
“Our offer must be based on religious practices. If we look at the prophet’s agreement in the Madinah constitution, civil rights were given to the Jews but the rights must be paid back with responsibility. They must have the responsibility and agree to defend our country and not insult the agreement,” he said during a forum here.
Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad declared Malaysia an Islamic state a decade ago in a move to counter PAS’s growing influence among the country’s key Malay Muslim population.
The issue cropped up this month when several groups asked for amendments to the Federal Constitution to stipulate only Muslims can be the prime minister after Utusan Malaysia carried an unsubstantiated report of a Christian plot to usurp Islam’s position as religion of the federation.
Nakhaie stressed that non-Muslims that have broken the social contract must be expelled from the country and asked the government to adopt a tough approach in safeguarding Muslim interest.
“If the agreement is broken then actions must be taken against them. If they break our agreement then they are our enemy and must be expelled from the country. We must not compromise with them. We must be stern with them when it comes to the social contract agreed,” he said.
Nakhaie added it is important that high level government positions not be awarded to non-Muslims for national security.
“We cannot give them important government position as it is not allowed for non-Muslims to become ministers in a Islamic state. Head of military must also not be given to non-Muslims.
“Without thinking about the future of our country, we are so willing to give them everything. Granting them their civil rights must be balanced with Islamic preaching so they will understand justice in Islam and the Islamic system,” said the former PAS member who defected to Umno years ago.
He also warned Muslims to unite as non-Muslims will become stronger if the community continues to quarrel among themselves.
“They are brave now and are willing to say anything because they are becoming dominant. They (non-muslim political parties) are only working with us to only achieve their goals. It is a marriage of convenience. We know what is their programme. We are already losing economically and now we want to give political rights?” he asked.
Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia’s (ISMA) deputy president Zamri Hashim added that Muslims must look beyond political affiliation for a common greater cause.
“We must think outside of politics. The Malay agenda is too important to ignore and a majority of Malays are Muslims. This is no longer about PAS and Umno,” said the Perak deputy Mufti.
Malaysian Islamic Youth Movement (Abim) deputy president, Dr Mohd Rumaizuddin Ghazali, also stressed that Malaysia must never become a secular state.
“This is why many non-Muslim politicians want to declare the country as a secular state because then the government will not have fund religious programmes.
“They are scared that if we accept Malaysia as an Islamic state then there are many implications which means that only Muslims have the right to lead the country,” he said.
Mohd Rumaizuddin added that the Malays are beginning to be trampled on and non-Muslims are starting to take advantage of the community.
“Because of politics, we are still not free after more than 50 years of independence,” he said.
Hizbut Tahrir Malaysia president Abdul Hakim Othman added the country’s constitution must be replaced as it has been stained by the colonial British.
“A Caliphate state is based on divine revelation. It is not a democratic or a theocratic state. It is only an Islamic state when the constitution is based on the Quran and prophetic traditions,” he said.

Angry villagers stage serpent protest

IPOH: Residents from a village here brought a live 10-foot python to the Mentri Besar's office to highlight their fear of having to bear with unwelcome visits from slithery “guests” for the past one year.
“We have been having sleepless nights as we never know when a snake would come by our beds,” said labourer C. Subramani, who acted as spokesman for the group of residents from Kampung DBI in Buntong.
He said he caught the snake on Wednesday night outside his house and decided to bring it to the state secretariat building here yesterday as “proof” of their traumatic experiences.
The villagers, he said, had to bear with incidents of snakes getting into their house compounds at least three times a week.

Subramani, 51, led the group of residents to present a memorandum to the Mentri Besar yesterday.
However, their plan was unsuccessful as the main gate of the Mentri Besar's office was cordoned off by police personnel as word got out earlier about the villagers' move.
The snake, which was kept inside a cage, was later sent to the Fire and Rescue Department. The cage was placed inside a car opposite the building.
Subramani, however, managed to present the memorandum to the Mentri Besar's special assistant Zulkefli Abdullah outside the gate of the building.
Speaking to reporters later, he claimed their previous complaints about the snakes had gone unheeded.
He said Kampung DBI, a pre-independence village, consisted mostly of wooden houses occupied by low-salaried workers and retirees and was overrun with lalang.
He claimed that the reptiles started to appear in their bathrooms and bedrooms following development work in nearby areas.
One villager died in November last year after being bitten by a snake, he said.
Zulkefli said he would hand over the memorandum to Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir, who was aware of the villagers' plight.

Nazri opens floodgates to religious hatred

Roberts: De facto law minister Mohamad Nazri Abdul Aziz misses the point. Yes, it is true that hundreds of irresponsible bloggers of all colour and creed have made sensitive comments to hurt and inflame other communities. But they are individuals.

Perkasa is a registered organisation and Malay daily Utusan Malaysia is a licensed newspaper. Can they act in the same wanton abandon as irresponsible bloggers and tweeters?

Rape is rampant in Malaysia - do we want to condone it by saying that it is the norm? Corruption is rampant - shall we then legalise it? Drug addiction is widespread, shall we let it be and say it is the norm? Crime is widespread these days - shall we do nothing about it?

There will always be irresponsible individuals, but when institutions like Perkasa and a national daily act recklessly, then our society will really go down the drain, for these institutions represent our collective conscience and morality.

Black Mamba: I am shocked that the de facto law minister can come out with such a lame explanation like that. Perkasa chief Ibrahim Ali did not tweet nor blog his warning to the Christians. He aroused religious sentiments in a public rally in front of a 150-strong crowd.

If you are prepared to condone such actions, be prepared for the consequences.

Hamisu: Does it mean we can all now make seditious and insensitive remarks without any repercussions? This has gone out of line. Now it appears that if something's a norm, then there's nothing wrong with it.

This appears to be the prevailing twisted logic of our de facto law minister. Crimes are the norm. Drug abuse has become the norm. Abandoning babies has become the norm. Domestic violence has become a norm. Does it mean everything is alright? What kind of minister is this?

Changeagent: What a weak and lame reasoning by the de facto law minister. Just because something is a Malaysian norm doesn't mean that it has to be tolerated, not especially when it relates to matters as serious as religious extremism, creating racial tension and inciting social upheaval or violence.

That is why we have common laws to safeguard public order, security and civility. Anyone who breaches the law or commits an offence must be prosecuted, and it matters little whether the crime is considered a norm or not.

It seems that Nazri is extremely unqualified to hold onto his current portfolio ministership when he doesn't even understand the basic functions of law in society. He is seriously out of his depth here.

When in doubt- always go for second or third opinion.

"There were many instances, too. A friend of mine was diagnosed as a having a septic leg and being a diabetic, he was told by the xxxxx Specialist Centre doctors that the leg up to his ankle must be cut since gangrene has already set in. It will cost RM25K just to saw off the leg. I told him to get 2nd opinion at the HUKM (Govt) Specialist Centre. The specialists there told him that there is nothing wrong with the leg and gave him antibiotics instead. Today (4 years after the incidence) , at age 61, he is still working and doing things such as climbing without much problems.

What would it be if he had listened to the unscrupulous doctors at DSC? He would be walking with crutches,! poorer by >25K and without a job to support his family. What a shame for these "Ugly Malaysians". I am sure there are many similar instances which everyone can share.

So be careful, Malaysian Specialists are giving the nation a bad name. They want to make money and make the patients suffer (more so if you have an insurance coverage). It is best to seek 2nd and 3rd opinion to be very sure"

Beware of Errant and Unethical Doctors! Please read.

"Dear friends,

I am a general surgeon in private practice in Kuala Lumpur. I would like to bring to the attention of the public the unethical practices of some doctors in private practice.

An 8-year-old boy was brought to see me by his father after suffering from fever, cough and vomiting for 1 day. He DID NOT HAVE ANY ABDOMINAL PAIN. He was initially seen by a general practitioner who insisted that the father bring him to see 'Surgeon G' at a specific private medical centre in Kuala Lumpur. The father at first refused and had wanted to bring his son to the medical centre where he was born but relented when the medical practitioner said that 'Surgeon G' will order some blood tests and will send his son home with some medications.

However, when he brought his son to see 'Surgeon G', the surgeon examined his son's abdomen and pressed so hard that he elicited pain. Then the surgeon told the father that the son had a perforated ! appendix and insisted that he be operated the same night. The father was baffled because his son did not have any abdominal pain prior to that excrutiating examination but he reluctantly agreed upon insistence by the surgeon. About 1 hour prior to the surgery, the father suspected that something was not right and he asked for his son to be discharged. He then brought his son to see me.

The first thing I noticed was that the boy had a slight cough but he was very active. His father told him to jump to prove that he did not have any abdominal pain, which he did with great enthusiasm. After a thorough examination, I was convinced that the boy did not have appendicitis and definitely not a perforated one. I treated him symptomatically for upper respiratory tract infection and sent him home with some medications. The father was outraged with what happened to his son earlier but he was relieved that his son was saved from an unnecessary surgery. Professionally, I could not! tell him that 'Surgeon G' may have tried to cheat him but, in my heart, I knew that was the case because I knew 'Surgeon G' very well and had inherited a few of his patients whom he operated upon and had botched the surgeries.

The next day, 'Surgeon G' called me and asked what happened to the patient. I told him I was certain that the boy did not have a perforated appendix but he insisted that the boy was very sick and had rigors (severe shivering) when he first saw him. Surgeon G said the boy improved tremendously after one dose of antibiotics. In my years of practice, I have not come across one case where one dose of antibiotics can cure a case of perforated appendicitis. IT IS JUST NOT POSSIBLE! He also said that the boy's father was a liar and had lied about his son not having any abdominal pain. Well, dear readers, I am a parent too. No father will lie about his son's health because he would have wanted the best treatment for his son.

I suspect 'Surgeon G' is giving kickbacks to many general practitioners to send patients to him to operate. In return, he would pay these general practitioners for each patient referred to him. He would cooperate with the general practitioners to convince the patients that they need urgent surgery. I have personally worked with 'Surgeon G' and I know that his skills are questionable. He told me once that it is alright for a patient to have a recurrent disease as a result of his incomplete surgery because he would then refer the patient to another surgeon to tackle the problem. He had caused one death from a thyroid operation and at least 2 cases of complications after galbladder surgeries which he refused to admit fault. In his clinic he has medical books with pictures of dangerous diseases which he uses to scare his patients into accepting surgery.

I am writing this to alert the public that there are doctors who are out for money only and are unethical in their practices. It breaks my heart that there are such individuals practising freely and fleecing off ! unsuspecting and vulnerable patients and giving this noble profession a bad name. The only defence patients have is to be knowledgeable about their own illnesses and not be afraid to ask questions. All patients have to right to a second opinion and no doctors should coerce their patients to accept treatment against their will. The only consolation I have is that most doctors, both in public and private practice, are still ethical and are sincere in helping their patients.
Please circulate this article to your friends and loved ones and lets hope no one will suffer in the hands of surgeons like 'Surgeon G'. Also, beware of the general practitoner who insists that you see a particular specialist in a particular hospital because he could be working hand-in-hand with that doctor.

No action can be taken against Perkasa chief Ibrahim Ali over his warnings of violence against the Christian community as such remarks are now a Malaysian norm, said de facto law minister Mohd Nazri Abdul Aziz.

No matter how unsettling such remarks are, Malaysians therefore "need to live" and "be mature" in dealing with such characters as Ibrahim and his ilk since social platforms and media such as Twitter and blogs have allowed statements such as Ibrahim's to proliferate beyond the government's ability to proscribe - or punish - them, he added.

"It's difficult to take action against Ibrahim now with the existence of Twitter and blogs ... because we cannot be selective in our prosecution," he told Malaysiakini when contacted today.

Ibrahim had caused public outrage after issued an ultimatum of sorts against "ungrateful Christians" if they went on with a purported plot to subvert the position of Islam as the official religion of the federation.

Ibrahim had based his remarks on an Utusan Malaysia report earlier this month that alleged Christian leaders were conspiring to change the federal constitution in order to install a Christian as a prime minister and turn the Muslim-majority country into a Christian state.

Nazri (left) said users of Twitter and bloggers have been guilty of making statements deemed sensitive to one or other group.

"If I take action now (against Ibrahim), I have to move on all (of such) blogs and those (issuing similar remarks) on Twitter," said Nazri.

That, he added, will be a difficult task as the government would then be accused of stifling freedom of speech.

"The courts will be full of prosecutions against (persons accused of making) seditious statements," he reasoned.

He stressed the mammoth prospect of such a task presently compared to a few years ago when those propagating extremism and those uttering racial insinuations were hauled to court and punished.

Nazri: Live with it

Mohd Nazri had previously said that the government should "get rid" of the right-wing group, as it had acted in an extreme manner.

His comments came at a time when Perkasa had acted as a major stumbling block to Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's economic reform efforts, as the group had decisively opposed the PM's proposal to gradually lift affirmative action policies to encourage open competition.

Mohd Nazri had then stressed that action can be taken if leaders of such groups uttered seditious remark.

In contrast, Nazri now says, "The state of the country is now beyond this... we have to live with it now.”

Religious leaders, critics and politicians from both sides of the fence have been mounting pressure on the government to act against Umno-linked Utusan Malaysia for its reckless reports on the alleged 'Christian conspiracy'.

Utusan front-paged an article titled 'Kristian Agama Rasmi?' (Christianity the official religion?) that cited unsubstantiated allegations on two pro-Umno blogs that Christian pastors were supposedly hatching a conspiracy to take over the country, abolish Islam as the religion of the federation and install a Christian prime minister.

The parties alleged to be involved have vehemently denied the reports and had lodged police reports against the Malay daily, and Utusan as well as the bloggers are presently under police investigation.

Church leaders: Act now against 'crusading' Ibrahim

While choosing not to retaliate, Christian leaders today called on the authorities to act quickly against Pasir Mas parliamentarian Ibrahim Ali for inciting religious hatred.

The lack of action, they said, risks further damage.

Speaking to Malaysiakini, Sabah Council of Churches president and Bishop of Sabah Albert Voon said Ibrahim's (right) threat to launch a crusade against Christians is sowing seeds of hatred which will embolden other extremists.

“His statement is very insidious and destructive to harmony and instills hatred against Christians over no basis.

“The church does not feel insecure as our security is based on our relationship with God, but the government should take action to safeguard civil peace,” he said, noting that this is not the job of the church which is a spiritual organisation.

He noted that what Ibrahim said was unjustified as it was based on an Utusan Malaysia report on a purported Christian conspiracy to usurp Islam. The report was unsubstantiated and has been refuted.

“When our churches were burnt, did you see Christians retaliate in anger?..It is always the other side which is getting worked up over (one) thing or (an)other,” said Bishop Voon.

“(The police say) they are still investigating (the claims of Christian conspiracy)…but imagine if a bishop had used the term crusade - he would be under Internal Security Act (detention) the next day.”

Gov't leaders 'shouldn't keep silent'

Similarly, Council of Churches president Reverend Thomas Philips said that it is crucial for government leaders to speak up against such extremist statements.

“With all the statements made, who will speak for those who have been attacked? The silence of leaders, who do not defend the rights of the minority, raises doubts among the minority. One person inciting religious sentiments would arouse many others,” he said when contacted.

He added that there are laws to deal with such statements which “incite or create disturbances” and this should provide space for action.

Yesterday, Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein reportedly responded to the issue when he said Ibrahim - who heads Malay-rights pressure group Perkasa - does not represent the majority of Malay-Muslims. However, the minister refused to brand him an extremist.

His ministry had issued Utusan a letter of reprimand on Friday but the move was chided by critics as being too lenient.

While Bishop Voon is wary of engaging “such an angry person”, Rev Thomas said the church is always open to dialogue as evident in their meeting with Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak last week.

'It's the Home Ministry's fault'

Supporting the church leaders is DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng, who said Hishammuddin's statement - after his ministry's seemingly lenient action against the Malay daily - has only made matters worse.

“This dangerous lie by Utusan has given a golden opportunity to extremists like Ibrahim to make Christians the object of hate and incite enmity amongst Malaysians,” he said.

“Hishamuddin even went one step further in defending Perkasa and Ibrahim by refusing to brand Ibrahim an extremist for calling for a crusade against Christians.”

He said Ibrahim's open declaration of support for Umno and allegiance to Najib is proof that the NGO's polemic cries are for BN's benefit, especially coming into snap polls.

Lim also chided BN component parties Gerakan and MCA for merely condemning Perkasa in press statements instead of using their position in government to act.

“So far no Gerakan or MCA ministers have dared to press for a cabinet decision insisting that cabinet acts firmly against racists and extremists seeking to burn one Malaysia with these dangerous lies,” he added.
